MISS MATTIE Chapter 12

A couple of years had passed since the last time we visited Mattie and in the meantime success was now following her.

She had gone beyond having to seek out people and now they were coming to her.

Hiring some office help relieved her of many of the menial tasks so she had more free time.

Upon visiting her sisters and spending time with her nieces and nephews she began to think about having a family of her own.

Mattie was always open with Marti (Mrs. Martin) and by this time Marti was like a mother to her.

When she told Marti about her feelings Marti agreed with her it was about time to seek a mate, and she laid out her list of young men she had been following.  She quickly added there were probably several more that could be considered perhaps some they had never met.

The summer was spent attending all the social events where men were present, and shortly there were several men calling and asking Mattie for dates. She had ran the gamut of those who needed resurrecting to those who should be kept on a leash.

Mattie determined not to be wore down, and settle for something she wasn't too excited about, for while she wanted to marry she also wanted it to be a lifetime romance.

She had met a young man who was studying law when she was attending college that she had been impressed with, and she wanted to see what his status was.  Mrs. Martin (Marti) was acquainted with the family and had seen the boy when he was a young lad.

Marti agreed that he should be added to her list, and decided to renew acquaintances with the family and invite them over including the son. Since the family lived a good distance away they were invited to stay the weekend.

Upon their arrival Marti soon situated them in their quarters and shortly before supper Mattie arrived home and freshened up for supper. The son, William was glad to see Mattie for he hadn't seen her for a couple of years.

William had a younger sister who dominated every conversation and made it difficult get reacquainted.

They decided to try to get away from her and go to the circus but her parents insisted that she go with them.

Because the young girl was between them most of the evening it was like Mattie had a date with little sister. Mattie wished she could throw something, and have her run and fetch it like she did with her dogs, but when they suggested she do something on her own it was a no go.

Finally on the bus ride home they were able to sit together and shared some of what had happened since college. When they arrived home everyone was still up and Mattie was wishing the parents would send little sister to bed which they did shortly after.

Mattie had dated enough to quickly know the measure of a man, but so far she hadn't had opportunity to place William on her scale of acceptability.

She invited him to go to the kitchen and have a snack before bedtime.

They talked long into the morning even though it was suggested that it was time to go to bed.  Finally his parents gave up and retired and Mrs. Martin followed soon after.

The outcome of the weekend was they planned to have a real date and spend some time alone and get to know each other. Mattie wanted to find out if he was romantic enough to satisfy her inner longing of wanting to be desired.
