DOWN TIME

He had experienced “morning after” confusion before, but after a couple of hours and some coffee he gradually began to come to himself. He knew the day was going to be difficult, but he would get through it. By the middle of the week he would back to normal, and it would be business as usual.

Still at this particular moment he had never felt like this before and it was getting progressively worst. He had often ended up in some flop house after a night like he just experienced, but this was far worse than he could ever imagine.

Over and over the thoughts came to his mind, “Where am I, how did I get here?” The more cognizant he became of his surroundings the worse things got to the point of true agony.

As panic and fear began to consume him he thought, "I've got to get out of here now."

He started to walk and to jog until finally he was running in a big circle and then he saw it, a wall too high to get over and no way to get under, there was no escape.

He had never felt loneliness like he was experiencing. Day after day the torment grew to the breaking point.

If only there was someone to share the pain with. but alas there was none. After many days his vision became keener, and dimly he began to make out faint images like unto persons. They were there but yet separate from each other, untouchable as they were.

In the midst of his torment he attempted to communicate with the faces that faded in and out but he could only hear his own voice echoing back to him.

The specters were without the ability to speak even though they tried to form words and converse they were unable to utter a word aloud. Perhaps he thought maybe I could lip read, and know what they were saying and he hoped they could do the same.

After many attempts he had a measure of success and asked, “Where are we?” The images faded in and out. At long last one remained long enough for him to ask again, "Where are we and how do we get out of this torment?"

The specter softly whispered, "You are here for eternity and there is no way of escape."

It was then realized that he was in Gehenna (hell) and remembered the scripture in

Revelations 21:7-8 He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

And then the verse; Hebrews.2:3 So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak?

He answered it himself, "I can't."
