There are scales of 1-5 and 1-10 and sometimes 3 out of four.
This is a function of language to provide us with signs and symbols that can be used to mean something, without having to explain what that meaning is every time we do so.
Interesting enough I have gone to the doctor and said; it hurts right here! The chances are he will reply “On a scale of 1-10 how would rate your pain.” I may fudge a little and make it one or two more than it is, hoping to get more sympathy.
Men will rate girls as they go by and act as if they were connoisseurs of the female species and competent to rate them on the 1-10 scale.
Job performance, intellect, and looks are all subjects that are rated. The rating is sometimes accompanied with a comment such as; she is so ugly she would make a train take a dirt road.
Another one I heard; “A girl who is actually a seven but truly believes she's a ten is delusional. She may have physical attractiveness generally but doesn’t compare to California girls. She might be a ten in New England, but she sure ain't a California Ten.”
Girls also rate guys but they start with zero and end with six.
As you might imagine GOD also has scales whereupon man is measured.
Proverbs 16:11 The LORD demands accurate scales and balances; he sets the standards for fairness.
There is no pulling the wool over HIS eyes; you can’t deceive GOD though some have tried it. One such case was when Daniel gave Belshazzar a message from God;
Daniel 5:27 "'TEKEL '-- you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient.
Daniel 5:20 But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit became hard with pride, he was put down from his place as king, and they took his glory from him.
His problem was he lifted himself up and did not honor GOD. In the spiritual world self-aggrandizement tips the scales in the wrong direction.
James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
1Peter.5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
If you will dare to be humble before the LORD the scales will tip in your favor and all that good stuff you hear about such as joy, peace and love will be yours.
A spirit of humility never debases you but will help to complete the work of GOD in your life.
