FEET OF CLAY

How disturbing it for Christians to hear of ministers who are false professors of the Gospel.

Some of these preach and at the same time pretend to be what they are not. It reminds one of the saying “Do as I say and not as I do.”

We sometimes hold these people up on a pedestal and believe they can do no wrong, but are discouraged when we discover that they have “feet of clay.”

They are those who are talented and able to muster a following, but are fatally flawed. What moves them is a lust for power, money, sex and other things that will eventually reveal what they are.

Ephesians 4:18-20 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. Since they have lost all sense of shame, they have abandoned themselves to sensuality and practice every kind of sexual perversion without restraint. However, that is not the way you came to know Christ.

While this occurs in all walks of life it is most damaging in the Christian world for it is here that people’s eternal existence is settled. There is no way to tell how many souls have been lost due to failure of those they have followed.

When Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream he revealed that the feet of the idol were a combination of both clay and iron indicating there was both strength and weakness in the feet.

So also it is that all people are afflicted with the same malady, weakness and strength.

Knowing this we need to recognize our weaknesses and guard against them lest we become part of those who have failed. When a ministry is destroyed there is no going back and starting over even though some will try.

Someone has complied a list of some who were found out and were unfaithful to their calling and can be found on the internet. This list concerns the more prominent church leaders but there is a less important list of some who are just as guilty of missing the mark. I pray that neither you nor I will ever be on either list.

2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
