FARM LIFE 2

This is a true story
My fictional Continued story will resume very soon.

Farm Life

As a youth I spent much of the time on a farm and I witnessed many animals give birth.  Like women not all births are easy and at times it requires some aid from the farmer.

Women have been given the task of carrying forth the existence of mankind but not without much discomfort and pain.

The mother of Christ discovered that doing her work for GOD required a willingness and commitment. Mary must have endured the suspicion and the whispers of people she knew. She found out that giving birth cause her pain and was difficult.

The bringing forth the new birth process was fraught with much of the same physical and psychological stresses ending in the death of Christ. The offspring of that was the creation process whereby men can be born into the kingdom of GOD.

I was thinking about the time I watched as a calf was born. The cow did her part and the calf was soon born. It wasn't necessarily easy for the calf as getting to this state was a process he went through. Moments after a cow had given birth she turned around and first looked at her offspring, then nuzzled it as the calf's tongue flicked out and licked her nose.

There was an immediate bond between the two and the mother proceeded to clean the calf up. As the calf sought nourishment the mother gave forth the necessary food to sustain and strengthen her child.

From there the two were not parted. They walked side by side and enjoyed the green pastures.

As I thought back to the time of my new birth and the process I went through before I came to the point of being born again. Being convicted by The Holy Spirit isn't the most comfortable thing I experienced.

As soon as I was born again something like the cow and calf occurred.  It was a bond of love established and again as the cow cleaned up her calf I was washed of all my sin.

I experienced a hunger I had never known before and the Lord brought me to HIS banqueting table and I was fed with the sincere milk of the word. As I walk with the Lord his words echo in my heart “I will never leave you nor forsake you”

Psalms 23:1-6 A Psalm of David. Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul: He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's
Sake. Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
Evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou has
Anointed my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I
Shall dwell in the house of Jehovah for ever.

The Fourth Man - Chapter14

Country Girl

These country girls

Being finished with the book learning things were heating up back at the ranch.

On some nights Mamie would stay too late to go home in the dark so she would stay over in one of the extra rooms. This caused some gossip even though Billy swore nothing was going on.

Although he would bring up the memory of the time they went swimming and he was wondering how she had changed in the last three years.

Then one day she told him to come to her house and they would go on a picnic and go swimming. That sounded good to Billy for he was caught up with the work.

He picked her up around ten and they rode at a slow pace for they were in no hurry. Billy said I’ll hang the food on a limb to keep the ants out of it and then we can go swimming.

Billy first took off his guns, something he didn’t do very often until he went to bed and then stripped to the skin.

Then he waited for Mamie to do likewise. She took off her dress and had a swim suit underneath. Billy looked as if someone had knocked him in the head with a stick.

She said let’s get in and walked in while saying “Brrr for the water was a bit chilly.”

He went in and had a refreshing time.  He said, “I was expecting… but am surprised… you know about the suit.  It was I was expecting…to just go without clothes on.”

She said, “All the girls wear them all the time and besides… do you remember what I said?”

“Well you talk so much I don’t know what you mean.”

She said, “Yes, you do I can see it in your eyes.  I told you to look me over cause you wouldn’t see me like this again until we are married.”

He said, “Yes I do remember but you didn’t have to keep your word on that one.”

She said, “I’m ready to keep my word if you are ready.”

He said, “Let me think about it, but I don’t want you to be encouraging any of these guys who are coming around just to see you.”

She said, “If I was you I would think fast.”

Billy went to talk to Mr. Bartlett about something that was beyond his understanding.  He had his ranch doing well with the help of Slim and the hands Slim hired. In another year he will begin to sell the cattle for the eastern market. He had been at it for three years now and Les was happy with the results so far.

But getting back to Billy’s talk with Mr. Bartlett.  He said, “Does it seem to you that these country girls grow up faster than the city ones?”

Bartlett said, “Why would you ask me something like that?”

Billy said, “Well for the last couple of years we have been having trouble keeping Missy from wanting more courting that she should have if you understand what I mean.

And then there is Mamie… well she is all over me and she wants to get married right away.
I’m afraid that if we don’t go ahead and get hitched she might run off with one of these guys that are sweet talking her when I’m not around.

She has a lot of good arguments on why we should go ahead and get married. We or I have a good ranch that is all fixed up like she wants it. I have enough money and the future looks good for there is a good market for my beef and she keeps saying she is a full grown woman and is ready for a husband.

So what I want to know is; Do country girls mature before the city gals?”

Bartlett said, “You got me, I don’t know, maybe so.”

“Well that don’t help me much but do you have any idea who might help me understand?”

“Well there is one thing you could do and that is; you and her will be sixteen in about three months. Why don’t you tell Mamie that you will marry her in four months and that will give you some time to come up with a better answer if there is one?”

Billy said, “I guess that is the best advice I’ve heard so far and if it doesn’t solve the problem I guess I will be a married man in four months.”

Bartlett said, “She is out riding with Missy but should be back shortly in fact here they come now.”

Billy’s mouth was dry and it was hard to speak. He asked Bartlett if he could help himself to a dipper of water.

After Billy got his water, Bartlett told his wife to come out on the porch. The girls tied their horses up to the hitching rail and came bouncing up on the porch.

Mamie came over and gave Billy a kiss on the mouth. Billy looked at Bartlett who said, “I guess it’s okay go ahead.”

Billy said,  “Well Mamie since you won’t leave me alone I think we should get married in four months, what do you think?”

She said, ‘What do I think? What I think is we should get married next week for you have been wasting a lot of time. You should have asked me four months ago if you wanted to wait four months.”

She looked at her mother and said, “Mom the wedding will be a week from Sunday.”

Bartlett looked at Billy and said, “In answer to your question yes, I guess these country girls do grow up faster than city gals.”

The wedding goes on

Billy was stunned by the sudden change of events. Missy had already rode home and told everybody the news.

Dad has a talk with Billy
When Billy got home everyone was congratulating him. He was in a state of shock. He told his dad he didn’t know if he was ready for this and his dad said, “You don’t have to get ready you just do it and ready comes upon you.
Maybe I should tell you a few things that will help you and your mother will have some good advice also.”

After what his dad told him he didn’t know if he should talk to his mother. He had always been able to talk to her but this was different.

As it turned out he didn’t have a choice for his mother sat him down and made him feel very uncomfortable, but as it turned out later on he was glad for all the information she gave him.  It was more detailed than what his dad told him.

That night at supper he said, “Now I feel ready, so bring on the bride.”  His folks had to laugh at that one for he had been so reticent before.

The next days were busy for Mamie spent time fixing up the house and making her wedding dress. Actually it was already made she just had to let it out a little for she had grown since she first made it.  She figured if she went ahead and made the dress it might speed things up a little.

After church on Sunday the preacher came out to the ranch and the crowd gathered. It was a big crowd for they knew there was going to be a party afterward with lots of food and drinks.
It was the biggest doings anyone could remember. For Billy and Mamie it was a solemn occasion that they had looked forward to for a long time and the wedding vows were a meaningful experience.

After greeting their many friends Jim drove them to the railroad station and they were off on their honeymoon.
It was going to be almost a day before they were in their room in New York first to Chicago and then on to New York.
They had a compartment for privacy but Billy was too nervous to do anything except kiss and hug Mamie.

For once she wasn’t pushing the issue like she usually did. They arrived at the hotel at four thirty in the afternoon and after getting their room they had supper. When back at the room Mamie started removing her clothes and before putting her gown on she strutted around and asked him if she had changed much from the first time he saw her like this.

He said, “Yes quite a bit. You have filled out nicely and I’m proud to see it.”

It was nearly noon before they got dressed the next day after which they had dinner and ventured out into the byways of the city. It was the first time they had been to a city as big as New York and the whole time was an exciting adventure. Toward the end of the two weeks Billy was anxious to return to their ranch.

As previous arranged Jim met them and took them to their home. The next day Billy hooked up the buck board and they went to Mamie’s folk’s ranch and visited for a few hours.
Her mother wanted to know about everything. Every so often Billy would blush when Mamie would say now mom that part is private and you don’t need to know that and I don’t need you to ask me about that later.

Afterward they went to Billy’s folks and went through a lot of the same things only it was Missy who asked the embarrassing questions.

Mamie said I’ll tell you everything when we’re alone sometime.

Later Billy said, “Don’t tell her everything.”
Mamie just laughed and said, “After all she is your sister.”

The Fourth Man - Chapter 13

It Needs Work but it is Ours

A man of property

Just before Billy was to return to school Les called him down to the corral and said, “You know the old Johnson place?”

Billy said, “Yes it’s a real nice spread.”

Les said, “I just bought it and I’m giving it to you. You are going to have to fix it up and run it yourself for it’s yours to run. While you are in school you’ll need a foreman to oversee it but when you are home you will be in charge. Do you know who you would want for a foreman?”

Billy said, “Yes, Slim is one of the best man for the job. He should have been foreman on someone’s ranch already.  He had his own ranch before till the drought and rustlers cause him to lose it.”

Les said, “I think you are right, he is the man for the job. I’m going to let you hire him for you have to start making your own decisions right away.

Since you have to leave for school I’ll help Slim get things in order and keep an eye on the place till you get out of school.”

Billy went to the Bartlett’s and got Mamie to go with him to his place.

She said, “It needs a lot of work but we can do it.”

Billy thought, “This twelve (almost thirteen) year old girl is talking like we are married already and I haven’t even got around to courting her yet. She acts as if we were going to skip that part.”

Back to school

With Slim in charge of the Billy ranch as it was now called; Billy returned to school.

Mamie had figured out how they could be together more than just the joint dances. She went and told the director of her school that she and Billy were engaged and needed to spend time planning their future. She said it would be better to give them time together than for her to have to slip around and have the other girls want to do the same as she was doing.

She produced a letter from her parents (Which she had written) saying that they were indeed engaged and it was alright for them to spend a limited time together.

Let them know we are a couple !
She told Billy to let it be known that they were a couple for it would save her a lot of trouble. There were several girls who liked Billy and Mamie wanted it to be known he was already taken.

One of the teachers objected saying she is hardly a teen and she was too young to be engaged.

Mamie assured the director that she was already a woman and that settled that issue.

She told Billy about what the teacher did and how she convinced the director the teacher was wrong.

Billy didn’t understand what she was talking about but didn’t say anything to the contrary.

With Mamie’s help Billy got top grades in school and he also got the top marksmanship award for shooting.

The instructors tried to convince Billy to join the army for they were sure he would make a good leader in the service, but he said he was a rancher with his own ranch which he was destined to run.

Mamie was happy with the way things turned out and she bossed Billy around much of the time.

She knew when to back off and enjoyed the game she was playing.

Billy didn’t care if she was bossy for she always made good decisions. He thought about some of the wives the farmers and ranchers had and felt that if in fact they ended up as man and wife he would be very lucky to have her.

By the end of the school year Billy thought of the years ahead and how long it would be before they were going to be marrying age and that was going to be a burden to bear… the waiting.

The next two years did pass.

In school a few months and back to the ranch for a few more. At school they were together as much as they could be much to the chagrin of Mamie’s teachers.

She constantly talked about her man and that he was hers. The other girls wanted to know everything they did when they were alone.

Truth was we studied a lot
Mamie couldn’t resist making up some racy stories for them. She couldn’t let them down by telling what really happened which was mostly studying and planning for the future.

Slim the ranch foreman wasn’t a letter writer so Billy had to get Jim to check and see if Slim needed anything and then have him tell his Mom (Sarah) to write and tell him how everything was.

This was the long way around but at least Billy knew how things were.

Mamie would talk about making curtains and taking the quilts she had made while in school with them for their ranch house.  She always talked in the we sense for she considered themselves to be already married except for a few particulars.

The teachers were glad to be shed of them for it meant one less problem they had to deal with.

The other kids

With Billy pretty well situated Les and Sarah’s attention was turned to the other children.  Missy was almost twelve with James eight and Caroline four.

Chen and Mai had a girl child of their own now and the children all mixed together. Jones and Lila had a couple of kids by now and Jim and Lily had one. The place was over flowing with children.

It was decided that when the school year session began, they would hire the school teacher to come and teach all the children on the ranch.  This would also include a number of kids from the surrounding ranches and farms.  Doing this would mean that Mamie and Billy could continue their last year studies at home and Billy could run his ranch at the same time.

He wanted to raise Hereford cattle on his ranch after seeing them.  Les went along with the idea after having Jim to investigate the breed and the success ranchers had with them. He and Billy picked out fifty head and brought them to the Billy Ranch.

He also bought an extra bull to try a cross breed version on one of Les’s ranches.

Missy was getting into boys and Les wanted Billy to talk to her about the dangers of encouraging them too much.

Billy said, “I don’t know what I can say that you haven’t already said, but I will get Mamie to talk to her for they are pretty good friends now.”

Les was somewhat concerned about James.  By this age Billy already had a gun on his hip but James seemingly had no interest in guns at all.  He does ride some but has no interest in being a cowboy.

Les figures he might be a banker or something like that. It looks like Caroline is going to be the smartest of the four.  She can do her figures and writes poetry already. Her stuff is simple and insists Sarah write down what she makes up and tells her to write. She then wants some body to read it back to her later on and then she wants to edit it.
Well so goes the Riley ranch life.

The Fourth Man - Chapter 12

School Dance
The dance

Billy had Chen to heat enough water to take the chill off and he soaked for a while, long enough to loosen up his muscles some.

James came in and wanted to know if he was going to stay home with him and play some games.

Billy said no, he didn’t think he would for there was a dance tonight and he was going to it.

James said, “You going to see that girl?”

“I don’t know, maybe if she is there.”

“Are you going to marry her Billy?”

A little impatiently he answered, “Listen you better never say that again or I will tan your hide you hear me?”

“Yes, I was just asking for Missy said you might so I was just wondering.”

Billy said, “I don’t know where these people come up with the idea that I like Mamie. If they don’t quit teasing me I’m never speak to her again.  I know you grow up on a ranch pretty quick but I’m only ten (nearly eleven) and I’m not interested in girls.”

One of the hands hitched up the buggy and pulled it around to the front porch. It had enough lanterns on it to see the way home late that night.  Since Sarah and Les were going to stay home a couple of the hands wanted to go with Missy and me.

Les didn’t like the idea of us going by ourselves so he sent the hands with us with some pretty hard and fast rules for them.

When we arrived at the dance, the hands took care of the horses and then came in and found themselves a partner to dance with.

Missy found a girl she knew and they danced together until some boys got up enough nerve to ask them to dance.

It wasn’t long before Mamie spotted Billy and she came right over and sat with him.

After a couple of dances she asked, “How long are we going to sit here before you ask me to dance?  There are some of the older boys who have already asked me and I said, ‘not now maybe later.’  So what about it, is it going to be you or should I find someone else.  I didn’t come here to sit all night.”

Somehow that idea of someone else dancing with her and holding her didn’t sit well with Billy. He didn’t understand why for he wasn’t interested in girls but it just didn’t sit right with him.

He danced with her all night and when someone asked her to dance with them she said Billy had already asked her.  Just before he headed home she said she had something to tell him.

All news isn’t necessarily good news

She said she asked her folks if she could attend the girls’ school near where Billy was going and they said yes. She said we can see each other often and go to the dances together every time they have one.

Billy was shocked by that for he was planning to get away from the teasing he always got and now he would also get it at school.

He told her he wasn’t sure if he was going back to that school.

She said, “I know you are for you have already been signed up by your mom.”

He said, “I don’t want you bothering me if you go there.”

She answered and said, “You know you are going to have to take care of me and protect me from all those naughty boys.”

Billy didn’t know how to answer that.  Here on the ranches if anyone tried to bother her he would put them in their place right off that is unless she wanted them to; but in a school situation it was different.

He said, “You already know there will be boys after you even though you are still too young to be after. You already look to be thirteen and that is the age boys are looking for. You are going to get me beat up by one or more of the older guys.”

She said, ‘You will just have to deal with it. You don’t have any trouble at the ranch with older guys.”

“Yeah but there I have Jim and my dad backing me up. Besides you are too young to be thinking about boys.”

She said, “Well if you remember it was you that brought it up and the only one I mention was you so don’t go off talking about me and other guys. I know how old I am and how I should act so you just behave yourself and things will be alright.”

He thought, “We aren’t even at school and we are already arguing. No telling what will happen when we get there.”

What cowboys do

A couple days after the dance Billy asked Jim, “Do cowboys grow up faster than the city boys?”

Jim said, “What do you mean or in what way?”

“You know in becoming responsible and things.”

Jim said, “Now you ain’t thinking what I think you’re thinking are you? You ain’t thinking about marrying that Bartlett gal are you?”

Billy said, “Naw I ain’t thinking that but it seems I am farther along in becoming a man than those sissy boys at school.”

Jim said, “I guess I know what you’re getting at.  Out here where you have to take care of yourself you are forced to do manly things quicker than if you are in the town where they have more protectors than out here.

A cowboy has to learn to do most of the man things at an earlier age like roping and riding and other stuff like shooting. You know all the stuff that they will have to do all their life. By the time they are your age they should have it all down by then and that will make them feel older than the city boys. The city boys might have an edge on the country boys when it comes to courting the girls but that’s about it.”

Billy said, “I just hope I don’t have to shoot any of them on account of their courting spells.”

Jim had to smile at that for the truth was about to emerge. “I guess what we have been talking about in a round about way is that little Bartlett gal isn’t it?”

“Yeah I guess so but how did you figure that out cause I didn’t mention her?”

“Well everyone knows you and she are courting whether you know it or not. I bet she knows it for she is after you and is putting in her claim on you early on.”

“Jim you mean she has staked me out as hers when I don’t have that stuff on my mind.”

“Yep that’s way it works sometime. It looks to me like the only thing between you, her, and the preacher is a little time. If I was you I would start planning your house and start building it.  Of course you should let her help lay it out for the woman should have some say in the way it is laid out for she will spend more time in it than the man does.

You can feel her out by asking if she knows what kind of house she wants and if she says yes then you know how far ahead she is in the planning. If I was you I would stick close to her for she has you, roped, and tied just waiting for the branding iron.”

Billy said thanks Jim, “I think I will ride over to the Bartlett’s and spend the night. They always keep asking me to stay so I think that’s what I will do.”

As he left Jim had to laugh and thought, “That boy is hooked and she is just playing him and can reel him anytime she wants.”

When he got to Bartlett’s he was putting his horse into the corral when he saw a horse he recognized.  It was Jonah’s horse. A boy who was fourteen and he was come a courting Mamie sure as shooting.

They were sitting on the porch when he got there and Billy said, “Jonah you should come down at the barn and check my horse.”

While down at the barn Billy said, “Jonah you should leave and not come back or there would be trouble because Mamie is my girl.”

When he got back to the house Bartlett asked where Jonah was and Billy said he had to go home.

Bartlett said, “That’s strange for he was going to have dinner with us,” then he went into the house and left Billy and Mamie on the porch.

He said to his wife, “It is sooner than I expected but it looks like the courting has begun,” and they both had to laugh at that.

A little later Mrs. Bartlett came out and asked if Billy wanted to stay the night and he said it was getting late so he would like to stay.  “I better go and take care of my horse and then I’ll be back.”

When he returned Bartlett decided to have some fun at Billy’s expense and said, “What are your intentions concerning my daughter?”

Billy laughed with him and said; “I don’t know, she ain’t told me yet.”

They both laughed at that and Bartlett said, ‘Yeah I know what you mean for she is just like her mother. Much of the time she tells me what I should think before I think it. They are both pretty smart but I guess they don’t mean any harm.”

Billy thought, “Maybe I should go home for this is getting out of hand.”

About then Mamie came in and said; “Time for dinner my Billy boy.”

He turned red because her parents heard her call him her Billy boy. She sat next to him and put her hand on his leg under the table several times until her mother told her to stop teasing Billy.

She acted as if she didn’t know what her mother was talking about. Her mother smiled at her and just said hmmm.

When around Billy alone she was shameless and kept him on the defensive most of the time.

The next day, before he went home, they saddled up their horses and went for a ride. When they came to the river they watered their horses and then they crossed over and went down to where the water was deeper.

They tied their horses to a bush and were throwing rocks into the water and Mamie said you smell and need a bath. This threw Billy for a loop and he didn’t know what to say about that. He knew he hadn’t bathe for a couple of days but didn’t think it was that noticeable.

Mamie said c’mon you’re going in and take a bath right now. Without giving him a chance to respond she started unbuttoning his shirt and when he tried to stop her she was unbuckling his gun belt and shortly he was standing with his pants down around his ankles. He tried to cover himself but she wasn’t having any of that.

He decided the best thing for him to do was to get into the water. She said get some sand and rub yourself down.

While he was washing himself he said, “You oughtn’t to have done that.”

She said, “You needed a bath so what’s the problem besides when we get married I’ll see you all the time.”

This irked him a bit and he said, “What about you miss smarty who knows everything.  Besides what would your farther think if he came along?”

She said, “I don’t know but in case he does; and with that she took her clothes off and told him to turn around and see what you get when we marry.”

He turned and looked at her, and couldn’t take his eyes off of her until she said, “You have seen enough,” as she jumped into the river and swam across and back.

She swam back to him and asked, “Are you embarrassed?”

Billy said, “Not anymore. I didn’t realized you were well on the way to becoming a full grown woman. She said there are plenty of girls my age who are already married and having kids.”

Billy said, “Well you aren’t going to be one of them I’ll tell you that right now.”

She said, “I know but since you have seen everything you will have to marry me now and by the way did you like what you saw.”

She had done it again for Billy was red as a beet from being embarrassed but he managed to say; “Very much so because I didn’t realized what I was getting until now.”

She laughed and said, “I’m getting a fine specimen for a husband I’m proud to say.”

She continued, “We better go I don’t want someone to come looking for us.”

They got out of the water and Billy just stared at her while she got dressed.

She laughed and said, “Take a good look for you won’t see it again until we marry.”

He said, “That’s okay I have a very good memory.”

When they got to her home they were still a bit wet and Mamie’s mother said, “Did you have a good swim?”

They looked at each other and she said, “Yes ma, a very good swim.”

Her mother said, “When your young man goes home I think you and I better have a talk and I hope Pa doesn’t have to talk to Billy, he won’t will he?”

Mamie smiled and said, “No ma, not yet,” and ran into the house.

Mr. Sandman

My Continued Story will resume soon.
This post is just for fun
and is shared at Tell Me a Story Blog Party

Mr Sandman, Bring Me a Dream !

How much have girls changed?

Back in the days of yore, young ladies (and even some not so young) dreamed about their knight in armor that was still somewhat shiny.
The words of the song Mr. Sandman spelled it out succinctly.

Bung, bung, bung, bung, bung
Bung, bung, bung, bung, bung
Bung, bung, bung, bung, bung
Bung, bung, bung, bung, bung
Bung, bung, bung, bung, bung

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
(Bung, bung, bung, bung)
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen
(Bung, bung, bung, bung)
Give him two lips like roses and clover
(Bung, bung, bung, bung)
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Bung, bung, bung, bung

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen
Give him the word that I'm not a rover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Bung, bung, bung, bung

Mr. Sandman bring us a dream (Yes)
Give him a pair of eyes with a come-hither gleam
Give him a lonely heart like Pagliacci
And lots of wavy hair like Liberace
Mr. Sandman, someone to hold
(Someone to hold)
Would be so peachy before we're too old
So please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring us, please, please, please
Mr. Sandman, bring us a dream
Bung, bung, bung, bung

The Fourth Man - Chapter 11

Time to Break the Young Horses

New chores for Billy

Riley said, “Billy you have been home a week and it is time for you to start doing some work around here. You could either work with the herd or go to Jones and work with the horses.”

Billy said, “I think I would rather work with the horses.”

“Well he has a lot of those quarter Mustangs that need breaking but you might not be able to ride them yet. They are giving the hands a tough time getting them broke.”

“Well I been thrown before so I guess it won’t hurt me to be tossed again.”

“Some of them are downright mean and will try to hurt you when they get you off. They’ll try to smash you into the corral, paw you, kick you and if that wasn’t enough they’ll bite you.”

“Dad I know all that stuff you’ve told me that many times before.”

“Yeah I know but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded does it.”

Just then Bartlett and Mamie came riding up and said, “Hello, you must be Riley.”

Les said, “Yes you have got me there.”

“Hello Billy,” he said, “Mamie wanted to come over and see this place so I decided to come with her and meet all of you.”

Les said, “Come on in and meet my wife and other children.”

Once inside he said, “Sarah this is our new neighbor Mr. Bartlett.”

Bartlett said, “Hello and you must be Missy and this is James I suppose.”

Billy said, “Yes you have them right and Caroline is in her crib over there.”

Les said, “Missy tell Chen to bring us something cool to drink.”

Missy took Mamie to her room and they talked about some girl stuff while the grownups got acquainted.

After they got through visiting Billy said, “I’m going to Jones’ and get started working the horses.”

When he got to Jones’ he asked what he should do.

Jones said, “You better watch and see what you’re up against.  One of the hands got on one of the horses and he had a rough ride but rode him till he quit bucking.”

Jones said a couple more rides and he will be broke enough for the army to start training him for army duty. After watching the rough ride the cowboy had Billy thought this is going to be worse than I imagined.

By night time he had been thrown several times and rode three or four. He was very sore and didn’t know if he could ride again tomorrow.

An invite to “dance with me”

On the way home Bartlett stopped by Jones’ place and visited for a few minutes.

Mamie finally got Billy to talk to her a little. He was so sore he didn’t feel much like talking.

He told her that by Friday all of the horses should have been rode and he would have time to get over the beating those broncos’ gave him.

She said, “You know there is a dance on Saturday night and I will be there with my family. If you are there we can dance together if you would like to.”

He said, “I may be too sore to dance but I believe my folks are going to be there.”

The next day Jones could tell that Billy was sore so he told him to help with the saddling the horses and unsaddling them after they had been ridden.

Billy tried to convince Jones that he could ride but Jones said, “One job is as important as the other so handle the horses and get them ready.”

Billy asked if any of the ranch hands were going to the dance on Friday night and they said, “Not after the week we have had.  Maybe we will go to town on Saturday and just hang out with whoever has the money for a good time.  What about you Billy are you going to have a date with little Mamie.”

Billy blushed and said, “I’m too young for dating and so is she.”

“Well c’mon now Billy you are almost a man and men have to let the girls know you are around.”

I’m only ten and that isn’t a man and she isn’t a woman. She is just a little older than my sister who still plays with dolls.”

“Well Billy you may only be ten but you are a tough ten from the way you can ride these horses we just broke.”

“That may be, but a tough ten or not, but I ain’t tough enough to ask her for a date and besides she is too young for dating.”

“Well you answer me this then. Why was a young guy about fifteen coming by here and trying to court her?”

“I’ll see you guys later cause I’m going home and have a hot bath and see if I am up to going to the dance or not but I ain’t dating no Mamie.”

A young man’s thoughts turn…

Billy was pretty sore and the ride home was pretty uncomfortable. He thought about the teasing the guys gave him but soon his thoughts turned to a young stallion that was almost two years old.
He decided that he was going to keep an eye on that one for he was ready for a new horse with a lot more life in him than his horse he had since he was four years old.

He wanted to talk to Les when he got home and he let him know he wanted that horse for himself.

He unsaddled his old horse and rubbed him down like he had done so many times before and put him in a stall with some feed. He had ridden this horse so many miles and to give him up wasn’t going to be easy.

He knew he would never let someone else have him for he was like a friend. The horse would always whinny when he saw him and come to him like a dog.

No, it won’t be easy to take another horse as his main ride but it was time to make a change. He would keep him in the pasture near the barn and ride him enough to let him know he still loved him.
