DIRTY BIRD - Chapter three

Sorry I Can't Help You !

After the blow up at the dance Robert avoided as much contact with Justin as possible while living in the same house.

He spent his time in his room or at the library. He was able to put the whole matter behind him and concentrate on his future.

Justin’s grades dropped below a passing grade and he had to struggle to get a D.

The night before he was finished with his classes Robert went to a dance as usual and several girls wanted to dance with him. They knew he was on his way to being successful and that appealed to many of them.

After the dance he didn’t have the use of his Pa’s car for Justin was using it now.

While he was walking home his former girlfriend caught up with him and asked him to walk her home for she was afraid to walk by herself.

Robert said okay for it didn’t matter to him one way or the other. As they walked she tried to talk about how sorry she was about the Justin incidence and that he could have her if he wished.

Robert stopped her in mid-sentence and said, “Justin has put you up to this hasn’t he?”

Before she could get her denials out he said, “I know him forward and backward and I think I know what this is all about. He has gotten you pregnant hasn’t he?”

After hem hawing a bit she confessed, “Yes.”

Robert continued, “And he wanted you to have sex with me so in a couple of months you could say it was me instead of him isn’t that right?”

She hesitated but the admitted it all was true. “But you don’t understand he said if this didn’t work out he would marry me so I had to do it.”

Robert said, “I have bad news for you.  Do you know Cindy Morgan?”

She said, “Yes she is that homely girl who is about thirteen years old and lives down the street from you.”

“Well it just so happens she is pregnant and guess who the father is? Her folks found out who the father was tonight and they caught him just before he boarded a train out of here. They dragged him out back of the station and beat him so bad he could hardly say I do to the preacher when asked “do you take this woman.

I think Romeo’s days are over for they have made him a promise if he was ever unfaithful to Cindy they were going to use their twelve gauge shot guns on him. He won’t be finishing school for he has to get a job and support his wife and child.”

Robert said, “I think you will be safe from here to you home, so and won’t need my protection.”
As he walked home he was thinking how he and Justin were such good friends and how it hurt to see where things had gone to.

Trying to be a little more psychological about it he thought people and things change and there isn’t much you could do about it.

He had tried to alter Justin’s ways for several years but he just went the way he wanted and no one could change him.

All one could do now was to accept things as they are and move on.

To be continued
