THE RACER Chapter 2

A Rocking Chair is Good Therapy
courtesy free clip art

With his schooling behind him Abel began to work in earnest at his marriage. Not having to go to school gave him some extra time to also work at repairing cars.

Shortly after the wedding his father passed on and his mother sold their house and went to Savanna to live with her sister.

This relieved Abel of that financial responsibility for which he was thankful.

Millie's mother had trained her well in the survival skills necessary to keep her house in order. She and her mother would get together and do the canning for both families which made it easier for both of them.

There were so many things Abel wanted to do to their place such as; put electric wiring throughout the house.

With only one light fixture in the entire house, and no outlet plugs at all, and with winter coming on he felt constrained to get on with that project as well as others.

With the woodshed full of wood, and everything set for winter the only thing he had to worry about was him getting back and forth to the mill to work until Millie came down with the flue.

In fact it seemed as if half of the town was afflicted with it.  That winter there were many people who never made it including Millie which left Abel devastated.

Loosing Millie he lost his own will to live.   Able stopped going to work and became somewhat of a recluse.

It was deep into summer before he began showing up in town.

The preacher would visit and Able would just sit there not saying a word.
Then the preacher would try to engage him in conversation but the most he could get out of Able was a one syllable answer.

From time to time when someone would go by they would see him sitting on the porch, and just rocking in his father's old rocking chair.  That chair was all he received when his father died.

One day an old neighbor came over pushing his truck and when he saw Abel he asked him to look at it and see if he could fix it for him.

Before Abel could say no, the old man said, “I desperately need this truck to keep from starving to death.  It is the only way I can make a little money to get by on.”

Abel just sat there rocking and the old man sat down and let out a long sigh and under his breathe said; “Lord help me.”  The two of them just sat there not saying a word.

After about an hour Abel got up and went out where the man had left his truck and just looked at it, not doing anything just looking.  After another hour he finally said to the old man, “Do you have a crank?”

The old man said, “I think there might be one under the seat, Ill look and see.”

After several minutes he said, “Sure enough here it is.”
Abel took it and stuck it in the front of the engine and cranked it over several times with no results.

The man asked, “Is it hopeless?”

Abel answered and said, “No I can fix it.”

The old man sighed again and said, “Will you do it then, please?”

Abel went back to his shed and got some tools and cleaned out the gas line and told the man; crank it over and see if it runs.

The old man did what Abel said and it started up on the third crank.

He was hollering and was happy, but when he looked around Abel had gone back into the house and closed the door.

The old man took it that Abel didn't want to talk anymore so he went into town and told it around what had happened.

The word quickly spread that Abel was moving around and talking a little bit which was good news to the locals.

The preacher let it be known that Abel needed to be left alone for the most part, not to be bothered by foolish prather.

As it happened the people didn’t take the preacher’s advice and started to drop by and sit with Abel on his porch.

Abel would sit rocking not acknowledging their presence except for a grunt now and then if they tried to extract a yes or no answer from him.

THE RACER Chapter 1

Mill Town
courtesy photobucket.com

In telling the story I'm about to relate I suppose the beginning would be a good place to start.

Not the beginning of the town which was a middling size cotton mill town but where and when the story took on meaning.

Without the cotton mill things would have been somewhat squally for the Mill hired most of the labor force in the town.

Contrary to some mills, these owners did what they could to make the town a fit place to live.

They set up a small clinic with an operating room and a half dozen beds for recovery.

The people who went there would pay something if they could, if they could not pay, it was accepted for them to just forget about it.

The town was large enough to support two doctors which was a plus.  Over all there were four or five nurses who did a lot of doctoring when the doctors were swamped with patients.

With six general grocery stores scattered through out the area it was easy to supplement their food stuffs that most of the women canned for winter.

During the summer they could buy from the farmers at a reasonable price, for canning purpose.

In town, there were all the other necessary venders with their wagons and horse, so you didn't have to go somewhere else to get by.

Our story in part is about was a young man by the name of Abel.

His father was kinda stoved up and had a hard time making any money so Abel had to work and supplement the family support money.

At the age of fourteen Abel got sweet on a young girl named Millie, and after time passed she felt the same about him.

Even though Abel worked at night at the mill and at other handy man jobs, he managed to finish high school.

Now, Abel was especially good at fixing cars.  He seemed to understand what made them go, and he was able to figure out what their problems were.  This would be valuable information to him later on in his life.

Abel and his girl made plans to get married right after high school although neither could see how they could afford to do it.

Graduation day came and Millie's mother told the dad that they needed to go ahead and plan for the wedding for the kids were set in their resolve to marry.

Dad being more practical said, “They don't have anything, and no place to stay, and I don't want them to move in with us.”

The mother said, “We have that five acre place at the edge of town with a house and shed I want to give that to them.”

The dad objected. “That is part of your inheritance from your folks.”

She answered and said, “We don't need it.”

Dad said, “Let’s just sell it to them.”

“No, no,” she replied, “They don't have any money and couldn't buy it if they wanted to.”

The dad saw that he could argue the rest of the day, but he wasn’t about to win so he relented and said, “Okay.”

Once that was settled the mother told the youngins of their plan, and the kids were overjoyed for this took a big load off their shoulders.

As the magic day approached they did what decorating on the place that they could.

The girl made curtains and people donated things they didn't need to help them set up housekeeping.

At last, the place was as good as it was going to be, and all that was left was to set the day for the wedding.

As Abel began to face the seriousness of becoming a husband he was thinking, "I don't know if I'm ready for all this responsibility of marriage".

Needless to say those thoughts were quickly put aside when he was with his beloved bride to be.

For this cotton mill town, the wedding of Millie and Able, was a big affair, and everybody contributed food to what you might call "The reception."

Naturally there were a lot of people who invited themselves, but that was almost expected.

Wedding

With plenty of food to eat and drink, everyone enjoyed themselves with music and dancing way into the night.

Some of Abel’s friends talked jokingly about a chivaree but nothing ever came of it.

By the time it should have happened everyone was too tired to do anything except go home.

Bill the Rancher Repost from 2010

This is an extra post, a True Story that will be entered on my wife Hazel's True Story site.  My Continued Story will begin soon!  Sign up to follow by e-mail so as to NOT miss any of the chapters.

The Rancher
courtesy photobucket.com

Bill was a rancher I knew, who was broke in the depression, but with extra hard work, some 15 years later, he owned several 1000 acre ranches with barns, out buildings and homes on them.

As was his custom, he went to one of the ranches to check on his cattle and upon arriving he found a couple had moved in to the house.

He asked what they were doing there and they answered we are broke and need a place to live.  His first impulse was to kick them out but decided to help them.

He told the man he could use him temporarily and he gave him a job.  After a short time they were gone and I wondered why they left, but Bill the ranch owner was a tight lipped guy and he didn’t say why.

Finally I couldn’t resist any longer and asked what happened.

He told me that few days ago he went to the ranch, and was unloading his horse from the trailer, when the woman who was under thirty came over and said; I need some clothes and described what she wanted.

The cost would be about $600 dollars for her outfit and before he had time to say anything she also said; that she would be very appreciative, and he could come over anytime he wanted, and she would show him how much she liked him.

Even though he was country he wasn’t stupid and a couple days later he sent them on their way without the new wardrobe.

Being young I asked him why? He said; if I went down and spent that much money on clothes for my wife, she would look better than the girl would.
He was tempted and rejected her most generous offer.

He would have had to live with the knowledge of his sin for the rest of his life.  There would have been other complications, for she would have had many more needs.

So many things that slip in unawares onto our want list, can lead to sinning against both GOD and ourselves.  All sin is also a sin against ourselves.

While repentance and forgiveness’ can settle the account with GOD we have to live with the consequence of our sin for the rest of our lives.

There are some sins that can't be undone not the least of which are adultery and fornication.

Make sure there is nothing on your want list that can hurt the one who loves you for wounds never heal, they only just scar over.

Remember; No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out; so that you may be able to endure it (resist it)

Milksop Final Chapter 53
Maria was sure Archie could Fix the Problem
courtesy photobucket.com

On the way back to San Diego Archie laid out the plan to get Maria out of this mess she was in.

He said “What this is all about is there are some people who want your establishment and will stop at nothing to get it.  It is primarily the location they want because of the proximity to the naval base.

They have trumped up this charge in order to get you to sell and the judge and the D.A. are part of the reason you have been charged for they are in on it.

But it goes all the way back east to where the money people are.  When you go to jail they will force your aunt to sell out cheaply, and with you out of the picture they will have a free hand.

Now this is the way we are going to handle this and get you out of this mess.

As soon as we get to San Diego I will draw up papers where I will buy you out and I will be the new owner of the club.

With you out of the picture they will have to deal with me and this is where we will be able to solve all the problems.”

As soon as it was known that Archie was the new owner of the bordello and that he was going to tear it down, and put a day care center in its place he was immediately contacted be the people who wanted the bordello and they were ready to deal.

Archie laid out the deal and it was a “Take it or leave it,” transaction, because the bull dozers were waiting for the okay to start the demolition.

Seeing the dozers on site caused the buyers to agree quickly to all the stipulations.

I will accept one million dollars in cash; all charges to be dropped against Maria and no further harassment against Maria or her aunt.

Archie specified how he was to be paid and as soon as all criminal charges were dropped they had a deal.

Archie had to smile when the lawyers for the buyers said, "This looks like a win - win situation for everyone."

Archie set up a trust for Maria’s Aunt and placed nine hundred thousand in her account to be managed by the bank's trust department.

Then he gave one hundred thousand to Maria for her work at the Bordello.

Maria wanted to know how much Archie's fee was going to be and he said “Nothing; I enjoyed doing it for you.”

She asked him, “What is next for you?”  He said, “Its back to Monterey and relaxation. What about you?”

She said, “Well I was wondering if you had any of those brochures around for I was thinking about taking a trip or maybe a honeymoon, if I was asked to marry someone. How does that sound to you?”

All Archie could think about was those two divorce decrees hanging on his wall.

He said, “I'm really tempted, but you know I have failed in two tries at matrimony, and I just don't know about having a go at a third time.”

Third Time IS a Charm
courtesy photobucket
She said have you ever heard, “The third time is a charm?”

He paused thoughtfully and then said - -

“You know, you are right; the third time will be a charm.”

- - And it was !!

Maria needed Arthie's Help
 courtesy free clip art

It had been a surprise to hear from Maria.  Not that she was in trouble, but the fact that she would want him to defend her in a case where she could get ten years in prison.

He had told her the truth that there were lawyers who were better qualified to handle her case than him, but the fact she wanted him was somewhat filled with intrigue.

He pretty much put it out of his mind for the next few days until he heard his doorbell ring and when he opened the door there Maria stood.

Archie was caught off guard and just stared at her until she said, “Well, are you going to ask me in?”

It took him a minute to gather himself together enough to respond saying, “Yes please come in.  I'm sorry that I hesitated, for you are the last person I would expect to be ringing my door bell.”

She said, “I had to come, I'm in big trouble will you help me?”  He answered. “Why sure, if I can help you in any way I'd be glad to, but you seem to indicate that you needed a defense lawyer who has influence and is well versed in your specific area of need.”

She said, “What I need is you and not someone I do not know.”  Archie said, “I am flattered, but think there are better choices than me.”

He said, “You know I fell into the practice of law in San Diego before I knew it and was defending some unsavory characters.

That was part of the reason I left there along with what I perceived to be a misunderstanding about my motives relating to you.”

She said. “You were right about my feelings for I'm suspicious about everyone.

Something you need to know about me, is that I was raised in a convent due to the fact my family was involved in - -well you know what they were doing.”

They kept me away from all of their activities, but as it happened my mother and father died within a month of each other and then my aunt had a stroke.

It was left to me to keep the business going.

I didn't want to be involved, but my aunt laid a guilt trip on me saying I owed her because she helped pay for my keep while I was at the convent and she said many other things about loyalty to family.

Finally I gave in and have been trying to get out of the business ever since. When you asked me to go with you to Spain, I overacted and thought the worst about you.  I realize now that I was mistaken and want to apologize for my behavior.”

Archie said, “Tell me about the problem and start at what you perceive to be the beginning of the situation.”

Maria said, “I think it all started when one of the other similar businesses in the area wanted to buy me out.  I had no qualms about selling but he wanted to pay me for far less than it was worth.

The next thing I knew I was charged with having underage girls working for me. The girls have disappeared, and now I can't find them. I have to appear in court in two weeks for sentencing unless I can get this resolved before then.”

Archie said, “I may be able to help you but I need to know everything that is going on before I jump into the mix.

Along about three in the morning Archie said, “I think I have the whole picture.”  He continued, “You must spend the night and we will go over everything that has a bearing on the case.

We will drive down to San Diego tomorrow morning but now we need to get a little rest.”

He told her to take his room and bed and he would sack out on the couch.

She started to argue, but was too tired to put up a battle.  When they got up in the morning they went out for breakfast, and got ready for the trip to San Diego.

Archie said, “I believe I know a way out of all this mess and will explain the details on our trip to your home.”

Milksop Chapter 51

Archie found himself being hired by a couple more houses of ill repute.

Seems he had to appear in court every morning on behalf of some house's personnel.

This time it was a charge of stealing some guy's money after busting some gal for prostitution.

Each day he thought, “I have to get out of here for this isn't what I became a lawyer for.”  The thing was he was good at was providing a defense.

He thought, “This is like some of the lawyers in Chicago who were known for their mob ties.”

It wasn’t long before he got to know all the judges and prosecuting attorneys and usually could work out a deal for his clients, especially after footing the bill for a big evening the night before.

He didn't want to know what services the hostesses provided, but whatever it was it was reflected in the cases the next day.  He knew he wasn't that good of an attorney.

He had to meet Maria almost every day for one reason or another.  As it turned out her Aunt had many investments that she needed legal advice on.

While Archie had no interest in Maria as a woman, he became friends with her.

He made sure he looked at the two divorce decrees he had on his office wall each day and that kept him from wanting to get involved with another woman.

Then it happened, there was a shooting at the "Bordello on the Border" and a man was injured quite badly.  He had permanent damage to his lung.

This meant Archie had two issues to deal with.  The first was a criminal defense and the second was for damages suffered by the plaintiff.

When Archie presented his defense the judge ruled against him at every turn and even he couldn't get the accused off on some technicality.
Judge

Up until now his cliental thought Archie could work magic.

This failure had caused him to lose some prestige, especially when his client was sent to jail and had a large judgment against him.

Archie had hoped by having a judge decide the matter it would be better than a jury, but the judge they brought in was from another jurisdiction and Archie had no influence on him.

After a couple of weeks everyone had forgotten about the incident and it was business as usual.

Archie often ate either lunch or dinner at the Bordello and Maria would eat with him and talk about places they would like to go sometime.

Archie would bring some travel brochures with him and they would pretend they were going there on a vacation.

This went on for some time when one day Maria said, she would like to go to Spain where my folks came from and visit some of the hot spots for vacationers.

Before he realized what he was saying, Archie said, “Well let’s go.  We can get two packages that will include travel, lodging and sightseeing.”

She eyed him suspiciously and said, “What else did you have in mind?”

He turned red and said, “Absolutely nothing.”

Then he said, “Forget that I even mentioned it.  I just got carried away with the idea of going to places I've never seen and didn't realize you might think I had some ulterior motive.

If you really would like to see some of these places then either go by your self or take someone who you trust with you.”

After that confrontation, he all but quit eating at the Bordello and he never took any more brochures with him.

He in fact told Maria to get herself another lawyer for he wasn't going to be available.

He had decided to take his own advice and go on a vacation alone!

Archie put a sign on his door that read, “Closed until I return - - Gone to Europe".

As it turned out he was gone for two months and when he returned he moved his office to Monterey and once again started over.

Some six months later he received a phone call from Maria.

She had been arrested and was facing some serious time if she was found guilty.

She begged Archie to please come down and defend her.

He said, “I don't think so because I don't think you could trust me.”  He added, “Besides there are plenty of attorneys down there you can hire that are better than me!”

He wished her well and hung up.

MILKSOP 50 Chapter 50

Sad Divorce
courtesy free clip art

Archie went down to work and filled out the paperwork for them to sign and picked up enough moving cartons to pack his belongings in.  He hated moving but this one will be simple for all he was going to take was his personal things.

He said to himself; “I can't believe this is happening to me the second time.”

Divorce Papers
courtesy photobucket.com
Marcy signed the divorce papers and Archie filed them an hour later.  If everything went well they should have the dissolution of the marriage in two months.

During this time Archie sold his partnership in the firm, and made plans to move.

Since he had quite a large sum of money coming he set up a payment plan to be paid over the next few years.

Marcy's friends were a comfort to her, and their attitude was let's party and she agreed it was time to get down and have fun.

Archie moved out the next day after signing the papers and never saw Marcy again.

He thought to his-self, “One day I thought I was a happily married man, and the next day it was over, it just doesn’t seem real.”

As soon as the deal with the firm was completed, Archie left Huston and ended up in San Diego, California with a one room office near the Mexican border.  His desire was to only take as many cases as he could easily handle.

Soon after he got his license to practice law in California, his business began to pick up.  Being near the border he had many people trying not to get deported.

The sailors there provided a lot of business for there was always someone involved in a civil case.

Then one day he got a new client.  It was the "Bordello on the Border."

The establishment was always getting busted for something. They would have been closed up except for the fact that many of the city fathers were customers of the place.

When someone was arrested it usually resulted in a small fine and a warning.

It was supposed to be a bar and restaurant, but the rooms' adjoining it were where the real money was made.

Archie received his final divorce papers and hung both of them from his two marriages on the wall with his law degree just to remind him not to get married again.

He couldn't figure out what he had done wrong.  He was twice married and the result was the same in both cases.

Apparently the women just weren't satisfied with him, and he couldn't understand it.

It seemed that almost every day he was in court with the Bordello people and then the owner who was an older woman retired and her niece was taking over the business.

The Aunt stayed long enough for the niece to fully understand the business and how to run it.

While the aunt was at one time one of the working girls her niece made it to be clearly understood that she wasn't for hire.  Her aunt agreed that it wasn't necessary for her to be a “working girl, only to manage the place.”

The new owner's name was Maria, and she supposedly was Spanish.  Her folks came over from Spain forty years ago and took up residence in Mexico.

They had moved across the border into the USA, before Maria was born so she could be born in America.  Thus she was an American citizen; while her parents had to go through the immigrant process to become citizens.

Maria was a Beautiful Spanish Girl
courtesy photobucket.com
It was when he was first called to represent one of the bordello's workers he first met Maria.

Archie knew many Spanish people in New York and she looked like them as to hair, skin tone and so forth. Archie was impressed with her poise and business acumen, not to mention she was absolutely beautiful.

Long ago, he had ceased to be impressed by a woman's beauty, for he had known many, and had married two of the prettiest of them all.

He made it a point not to ask anything personal in their dealings, because he totally wasn't interested in her except as a client.
