THOSE WERE THE DAYS Chapter 2 - Starting to grow

Mother and Child

Having arrived at the age of one and mastering much of the language needed at that stage, he laid out the process and his methodology for the future life ahead.

It was a little early for plans to be made, but his process was to consider every step as a battle to be won.  He was determined to always make the best use of the tools at hand. Those were tiresome days while waiting for his mind and body to develop.

Learning to talk

Mama was trying to teach him new words, one of which was papa and she tried to associate that word with a person who Logan felt he had no need of.

He didn't need papa for he had mama.

After another tedious year Logan was two years old and realized that sometimes more than one word could refer to the same thing. For instance da da and pa pa was the same in some instances. But he still had no need for either word because of who it referred to.

He discovered something that he later learned was called pain, and should be avoided in most cases. It was one thing to be taken out of the comfort zone but pain was in a class of its own.  He acquired all this useful knowledge in response to his stubborn willfulness.

Slowly days passed, and he arrived to the age of three. The uphill battle to become this person he now was had been taxing, but had been worth the struggle for he was now prepared to rule his domain.

As far as he was concerned the world revolved around him and was subject to him and his wishes.

While the dolly had lost it's strong influence, it still occupied its place on mama’s bed and each day it bothered Logan more and more. The very presence was an irritation till one day his mother was taking him shopping.

While she was getting ready, he climbed on the bed and ripped the arms and legs from dolly and hid it in his jacket.

While traveling to the store he tossed the dolly out the window. When mother discovered what he had done she took him to papa and woefully described what his actions had been.

As it turned out papa felt the same way as Logan about dolly and wasn't concerned about what Logan had done.

It wasn't pleasant for Logan for several days but he thought it was worth it.  Mama had taken dolly to the doll hospital and one day she proudly returned with it all healed and well.

When she saw Logan looking at the doll in her arms she threatened him with great violence.  With that mama placed dolly in the great trunk and locked it securely. Although dolly returned home, she never was laid on the bed with her head on the pillow again.

Logan observed that as each year passed, mama would change a little so he had to change with her in order to always get his way.

With him and papa things were different, for most of the time neither one acknowledged the other's presence and both liked it that way.

Visiting the kin folks was nigh unto torture for he had to sit quietly and act like it was a special treat when given a stale cookie.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS Chapter 1

My Own Little World

Arrival

Yes, those were the days with the daily events displayed for all to see and secret things too private to be shared at least in the now.  Such as the secret thoughts that Logan a three year old kept to himself; the world he could escape to when life became too taxing.

Today the greater wisdom is that three year olds desire to please but if that is true then Logan was retarded or far advanced beyond his years.  Logan's world was all about him, he was the only thing that mattered. His way was the only way. He insisted in raising himself for he knew what was best for him.

One might ask, “How did he get this way so early? It is understood this attitude should be reserved for adults not for children.

To understand this phenomena we must start before the beginning.

Logan's mother was young when he arrived upon the scene, and while she should have been past the stage of playing with dolls, she wasn't.  She would make up her bed, fix the pillows just so and put her favorite doll on the bed with it's head on a pillow. There it would rest until she felt the need of comfort that only her dolly could give.

Being a tweener she wanted the best of both worlds; to cling to her childhood while becoming a woman, and responding to attention heaped upon her by young gentlemen.  She strained at trying to understand the mating dances performed by these outlandish male creatures, that were accentuated by strange lies and bodily movements.

Their display of the unseemly provoked little interest for her and she questioned their sanity.  During one of the more entrancing displays she became overwhelmed by unknown emotion and entered the state of M.R.S.

Unbeknownst to her she possessed a fertility nature and after participating in the fertility rite, she expelled a male child not unlike the male in her life.

While she was disinclined to part with her favorite doll because of her past relationship with it; there was another interest in her life.

Now it would be up to the new born Logan to prevail in the conflict between him and the favorite doll who had an edge because her sweet doll could say, “Mama.”

The favorite doll routine went forth everyday, but Logan was determined to win out and while he had not mastered the word, “Mama,” as of yet, he could make screeching sounds that would always draw attention away from the doll to himself.  He further could say “goo goo” in several languages and was daily adding to his repertoire of words.

Logan finally prevailed in this his first battle and the power of strong determination became his main stay. The doll was done in by it's limited abilities which were in part: passivity, wetting itself, closing it's eyes and saying mama.

Logan on the other hand had almost unlimited resources. He could do everything the doll could do, and so much more.  His need for sustenance and sanitation alone gave him a great edge due to the time involved factor.

Being victorious Logan could now do a case study on his mama that lasted long after he left the nest. He tested her at different levels and recorded how she responded and the time it took.

For faster response he would turn up the screeching volume which signaled urgency. After Logan had mastered techniques of control over "mama" he was now in control of his world and ready to go forth.

THE CHANGING SCENE

Changing scenes
courtesy photobucket.com

Admittedly it is hard to keep up with the changing scene in the world and in the USA, in particular.

The political arena is little more than a device whereby the mass of people within its borders are manipulated by the whims and philosophies that have been conceived by misfits - - and are now in political office.

The fights over the rights guaranteed by the Constitution are never ending and are being diminished as we speak.

Issues like, “The right to work,” which is little more than; whether the unions have the right to force workers to be dominated by union bosses or not.

The attempt to establish a union dictatorship within the democracy we live under, is well on its way to becoming a reality, and is strongly supported by the present administration.  Once established they will control every aspect of the lives of the citizens of America.

Then there is the rights of those who espouse the right not to work, and is always in the forefront.

There is the belief that one should not have to work and contribute to the nation's welfare if one chooses not to. They seek to have cost free from prenatal care to their funeral, being absolutely without cost or labor to them. Included are the basics such as; housing, food, health care, and spending money for other necessities and entertainment.

The battle continues over the second amendment right to bear arms, and is misunderstood by the masses.

When reading after what the founding fathers said concerning it, you will understand it is a defense against the government taking over the lives of the citizens, and enslaving them much like what was happening in England to the citizenry even though they had the Magna Carta.

Germany became a dictatorship via the ballot box and proceeded in the disarming of the populace.

The power given to the German brown shirts and the blacks shirts, reminds one of the powers given to “The department of homeland security,” and “The patriotic act,” to wit;

The Right to a speedy and public trial: The government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

Freedom from unreasonable searches: The government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation (imaginary or real)

Freedom of association: To assist (in supposed) terror investigation, the government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity. (This includes you and your church)

Rand Paul said, "Do we want a government that's looking at all our visa bills and seeing what our reading habits are?" Paul asked. "Do we really want an all-encompassing government that is looking at every record from top to the bottom and invading our privacy?"

Four members of the Supreme Court now view the Constitution as a series of recommendations. The so called "A living document" which simply means they decide what the laws should be and can ignore what the Constitution says. They put their word above the protections of it.

The appointment of one more liberal justice will totally annul the previous interpretations of the document and our lives will be changed forever.

All religions are now declared to be legally equal. That puts Jesus Christ along side L Ron Hubbard as being equal.

That shouldn't make Christians happy with the changing scene.

Whatever our view or persuasion the one thing we can all agree on is, "We did it to ourselves."

Time out for me to rant and muse a bit before the next fictional story begins!

BILLY HILL Chapter twenty three Conclusion

Wedding Day
courtesy photobucket.com

It was six o'clock and the rooster had been crowing for some time now. It was time for the hens to get up and start to lay some eggs for he wasn't about to let the hens sleep in. They knew he wouldn't have any use for them if they didn't lay those eggs and the only thing left was, "The pot."

Billy got up and washed up a little and started to fix his breakfast.  He smiled and said to himself, “I'm going to have to get me a wife to cook my breakfast,” all the while thinking about the days coming events.

One of his brothers was going to watch over his place while he was gone so that detail had been taken care of.

The wedding was going to be a simple ceremony with Linda wearing a wedding gown her mother had made for her, and Billy wearing his dark blue suit.

Billy had a black suit he wore for funerals but decided for this he would rather wear blue for the wedding. The local pastor would perform the ceremony and the reception would be after a couple of pictures were taken.

As to the wedding party, her mother would be her matron of honor and Billy's father would be the best man.

The selection of his father was a little different but it stopped a lot of arguing among his brothers, cousins and friends who all wanted to be best man.

Food for the reception was going to be part pot luck and part catered.

Several of Billy's friends were in the sheriff's department and were going to make sure no one interrupted the proceedings. I suppose you might say everything was ready for the eleven o'clock happening.

The waiting until time to get ready and leave seemed like an eternity for Billy.  All he had to do was take a bath and dress. As for Linda there were a lot of last minute things to do, so she didn't think about the time and besides she had slept in until her mother woke her.

At last! The moment had arrived. Billy and his father were at the make shift altar.  Linda's mom was coming down the aisle that was filled with saw dust. Then the music played, "Here comes the bride."

Billy was glad it didn't say, “Here comes the groom,” for he wouldn't have been there.

Since Billy was not the most handsome man around he wondered how he was able to get such a beautiful woman to fall in love with him. She must have seen something in him that he had never seen.

As she approached the altar he reached out, took her hand and shortly after a few words; they were man and wife.

The pastor gave thanks for the food and everyone headed outside to the tables where the food was. It took about fifteen minutes for the pictures to be taken, and then the new Mr. and Mrs. Hill went from table to table and thanked each person for coming.

Then quietly they slipped away for they wanted to get on the road.

Linda wanted to leave her wedding dress at her mother's place for her mother was going to remove some of the lace and make some other changes in it and fashion it into a party dress.  Her mother said it doesn't make any sense to put such a lovely dress in a closet for thirty years and then throw it away because it had rotted.

Linda began to remove her gown, and she asked Billy to help her with the buttons and he obliged her.  Then she dropped the dress, and started to remove some of her under clothes that went with her gown. Billy gulped and turned his back to her, he wanted to change his shirt which was sweaty and after changing shirts he waited for her to get dressed.

After a bit of shuffling her clothes she said; it's alright now! When he turned around she was almost naked and he was speechless.  He knew, she knew, he was embarrassed, and she was just having fun with him.

Finally he spoke up and said, “How would you like it if I suddenly took all my clothes off?”  She just stood looking at him, and after a while said, “Alright I'm waiting.”

That was too much for Billy so he said, “You're shameless, put your clothes on - - I'll meet you at the car.”

So! They were on their way with a hundred miles to drive to their first stop.

Billy felt foolish for making a fuss about her undressing in front of him. It was being married and all of what marriage meant had not fully sunk in as of yet.

Linda said she was sorry about teasing, and embarrassing him but it was all in fun.

Billy answered and said, “It was that you just caught me off guard.” Linda asked, “Is there any thing wrong with a husband and wife dressing or undressing in front of each other?”

Billy said, “It isn't that it was wrong, it is just that this is new to me, and I will get over it rather quickly.”  Linda said, “That's good for I am not a prude, and I expect to get to know you very well.”

After two and a half hours they arrived at their nights lodging and found their cottage. After unpacking, they went to the lodge for their supper.  By the time they finished eating it was getting dark; they returned to the cottage and pulled the shades down for privacy.

Linda went in and took a shower, and dressed for bed. Billy felt he needed to do likewise, and he came out with a towel around himself. He went over to the bed where Linda was and turned out the light, then lay down on the bed.

Linda said, “Turn the light back on for I want to see what I am doing.”

Now I could tell you in detail what happened that night, and the two weeks of their honeymoon, but I would just bore you with the details.

I will just say they did what couples do on their honey moon, and you can figure it out from there.

As you might suppose - - they lived happily ever after!

The End

Dun and Bradstreet

Dun and Bradstreet Logo
courtesy photobucket.com
Many years ago I wanted to make some purchases for my business from a company I did not have a line of credit with.

I spent some time in making my selections, measuring costs against needs.

Finally I had a list which ran several thousands of dollars. I approached the credit manager and ask for an application for credit. I had filled out these forms many times before, and I had all the information needed to complete the form.

He just looked at me and then picked up a large book and said; if you are in here you can have all the credit you need. If not you might as well leave because we will not do business with you. I never saw a book like that before, and although I had heard of Dun and Bradstreet I couldn't relate to them at all.

The credit guy started thumbing through the book, and I was getting ready to leave because I thought there is no way he would find me in there.  I was shocked when he said; “Here you are, you are all set up to make your purchases.”

Some time in the next year they came out to my place of business and asked a few questions in order to update their files and that was all there was to it. This was some sixty years ago so I don't know how they operate now.

I don't know why I thought of that experience. I can't remember the last time it came across my mind but I wondered if there are people who are unaware their name is written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelations 13:8 And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, every one whose name hath not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that hath been slain.

This speaks of those who will not accept GOD'S forgiveness but also implies there are those whose name is written in the Lambs book of life whether they know it or not.

In my instance my name was in the B and D book but it still required me to as it were activate it otherwise I would never received any benefit from it.

Courtesy photobucket
Perhaps there are those who haven't discovered that their name is written in the book of life, and they need to go to the source and find out. Can you picture a person coming before GOD and asking HIM; is my name in the book? And his answer would be it is if you desire it to be!

I like the way Luke puts it; Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

So I pose the question, “Is your name written in the Book of Life before the foundation of the earth?”  Why not find out by doing what the scripture emphatically states. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, and it implies if you don't you aren't.

This almost seems paradoxical in the sense that if you do, you were, and if you don't you wasn't.

People who are looking for a bargain should take advantage of this for it is the best deal you will ever find.

BILLY HILL Chapter Twenty Two

Embarrased
courtesy photobucket.com

The next day was the day before the wedding, and Billy went by to pick up Linda about ten o'clock and they headed out to their new home.

On the way out there Linda put her arm around his shoulder, and once again straddled the gear shift. This made it a little difficult for him to shift gears and in doing so his hand kept rubbing her leg. This had him a little flustered and then his hand slipped and touched her somewhere above the knee.

She teased him saying, “You are getting a little ahead of yourself aren't you? The wedding isn't until tomorrow.”  He didn't have a quick retort for that one, after what seemed to be quite a long time he said, “If that is the case maybe you better sit over on the other side of the seat.”  She just laughed and said, “Maybe I had,” but she didn't move over.

They arrived at the house and went inside, and a couple of men were finishing the painting and were almost done.  Billy said, “I hope the colors are okay for I didn't have time to talk it over with you. Your mother helped me pick out these colors and said she had some beautiful material that would go with them for curtains.” Linda said, “My mother has good taste and I know what she had in mind.”

Linda had an idea what kind of rugs she wanted so armed with that information they headed for lunch.  On the way back to town she began to talk about the wedding and reception. She said, “We should slip out as soon as practical and be on our way to our first stop.”

Billy wanted to stop the conversation right there for it was going where he didn't feel comfortable talking. She went right ahead and plunged right into the wedding night and Billy began to sweat.  She talked about things Billy would not have dared to discuss with his men friends. Things he never heard of.

She never let up and it made him wonder where she had learned about all this stuff. Stuff was the best way he could describe it. Then she said something that took his breath.  She said we are not going to waste months or years waiting to experience a mutually satisfying relationship.

With out hesitation Linda said, “Husbands and wives should be able to talk and learn together and not be embarrassed about anything.”

Billy was weak by now, and for some reason his mind went back to the time when her mother said to him, “She needs to have a little more time to mature and I want her to go to finishing school for two years.”

He then realized that this wasn't the shy little girl he had asked to marry him.

This was a grown woman and he better get used to her.  He wanted to ask her where she learned all this stuff, but was too embarrassed to do so and besides she might ask him why he didn't already know the things she was talking about.

They arrived at the diner and ordered some food. Billy was quiet and said very little, and she taking his lead said very little also.

They went back to the car and on the way to her house she told him all these things we discussed is only a theory at this point, but starting tomorrow we will test them out.

Billy dropped her off and went home for a couple of hours until it was time to go back to Linda's house for dinner. There he sat, thinking about all he had heard from Linda.

Each and most everything she had said, he concluded after getting over his shock; didn't sound too bad.

BILLY HILL Chapter 21

Pretty Woman
courtesy photobucket.com

Billy woke up early for he had several things to do.

He planned to call Linda about eleven thirty and see if she felt up to a busy afternoon.  First it would be lunch and depending on how quickly she had recuperated from her travel there were several other things that needed to be attended to.  When he called she told him that she had been up since ten thirty and she was ready to go.

He picked her up around twelve and since she had some toast and coffee they went to the appliance store before they ate lunch.
Courtesy photobucket.com

He showed her what appliances he thought would be good, and told her she could pick out something different if she wanted.

She selected a different washing machine, and added something called a vacuum cleaner.

Then it was off to the diner for a late lunch. He wanted to take her out to see his mother for she had not had much contact with his mom.

On the drive to the farm, Linda did something that surprised Billy. She moved over against him, and put her arm around his shoulder as they drove along. The car's gearshift was on the floor board, and made it a little uncomfortable for her the way she was sitting for it was in the way, so she put one leg on each side of the gear shift and scooted real close to Billy, and that solved that problem.

Billy wondered if she would continue to do that after they had been married for some time, or if that was just a temporary thing.

They arrived at his parent's home and went in to see his mother. After greeting his mother she hugged both him and Linda.

Then she told him to go down and talk to his father for she wanted to talk to Linda.

After about a half hour Billy could hear laughter coming from the house and he told his father they should join the girls for a visit.

Billy and his father joined the women for some ice tea and cookies and the conversation turned about the rehearsal that would be held at the church though the wedding was to be in the tent. Also there was a lot of cooking to be done tomorrow for the reception.

As Billy and Linda were leaving both his father and mother said they were pleased with his choice, and were glad he had found such a pretty woman.

Those last four words stuck in Billy's mind; "Such a pretty woman."  He realized that he had never thought of Linda in that light. To him she was a wonderful person, a good person, a woman who was nice to look at, but pretty never entered his mind.

He thought it must be the country in me for he had seen value in her as a person and never concentrated on her looks.

As they were getting in the car he stopped her and just looked at her. Then it dawned on him, she is the prettiest girl I have ever seen. Then he stepped back and looked at her form, and she was nigh unto perfect. He couldn't believe he had never noticed how comely she appeared.

“It was a good thing I didn't consider her beauty,” he thought, “for if I had realized that I would have thought she was far above me and would never tried to date her.”

These thoughts were one of the secrets he would keep to himself till he died.

Out of desperation he comforted himself with the thought that the reason he didn't look at girls very much was because so many of the farm girls were unkempt and ugly. Some had already started to dip snuff and use a spit can.

Linda asked; “What has come over you?” He answered her by saying; “I was just enjoying looking at you and observing how beautiful you are.”

She was surely surprised at that and said; “Why thank you Billy, you have never told me that before.”

To be continued.
