MY EX IS BACK

This story is Fiction but could happen to most anyone!

The alchemist of teenagery projects a combination of lust and love and creates an image that lasts a lifetime. With rare exception the difference between teenage boys and girls is defined by lust (boys) and love (girls).
When the two are combined the result is “a teenage romance.”  With boys it’s no problem to “Get over it” while with girls it “Lasts for a life time.”

The emotion for girls is transformed into an image of true love by Eros-The god of Love. This love can never be forgotten and seldom be matched by reality. The god of lust comes and goes with bodily chemistry. Both gods demand continued satisfaction and the lack of which results in frustration (for boys) and heart break (for girls).
I hesitate to tell my story because it is so redundant and oft experienced by so many but I have a need to “Get it out” and share it with you!

When I was a junior in high school Chip one of the most popular boys, in the school became friendly with me. He was a senior and I was thrilled that he was interested in me a junior.

He was dating another girl who was a senior but he assured me he only went with her because of his parents insisting on him doing it. His and her parents were friends and they hoped he would marry the girl someday. So he was only doing that to please them.

It wasn’t long after we began to date that he pressured me to have sex with him and when I wouldn’t he said his other girlfriend did and I should if I wanted to keep dating him.

I held out for two weeks but when he didn’t call or come around I relented and did it.  From that time on it was a regular thing and the other boys began making lewd remarks to me as if they knew all about what we were doing.

I told Chip and he said just ignore them for that is just the way teenage boys are. It was humiliating but I tried to pay them no mind for I was the girlfriend of the most popular boy in school.

The other girl he was dating also made unkind remarks to me like slut and whore but I knew it was just because I was dating the boy she thought was her man.

I suppose I should have been jealous of him splitting his time between us but I understood why it had to be like it was.  Her dad was going pay Chip’s way through college and give him a good job when he was finished so I figured a few dates was a cheap way to get an education.

After Chip graduated he entered college and I was in my final year of high school. When he could come home he had to spend most of his time with his other girlfriend but we would slip away for some intimate time together. We never went out together but always had our private moments.

All the last year I didn’t date or go out with any of the boys although several wanted to take me out. After school I got a job and was making my own money and when I could manage it I would visit Chip and we were just like a married couple.

He kept promising to move in with me when he finished school and he got his job with Maribelle’s father’s business.

Those were long and sometimes lonely days while he was away. Finally he graduated and I wanted to go and see him get his diploma but he felt it better if I didn’t come because Maribelle’s family was going to be there.

He returned home but I didn’t get to see him for two weeks. He explained he was busy getting settled in his new job.

At last we got a weekend away to ourselves and he was needing me badly. We stayed in mostly for he didn’t want to be seen with me because Maribelle was planning her wedding with Chip.

I questioned him about that and he assured me he wasn’t about to marry her for he loved me. There was one thing about Chip, no matter what things looked like he could always clear them up for me.  It was getting harder for us to find time for ourselves even though I had moved out and had my own place.

Then it happened. The newspaper had the picture of Maribelle and Chip with the wedding announcement in two weeks.  Chip wasn’t answering his phone and I couldn’t get hold of him.

One of his friends told me he was away preparing for the big day. There wasn’t going to be a big day, Chip promised me. The wedding day came and I went to the church to see Chip and they wouldn’t let me in.  They said if I made a ruckus they would have me arrested.

I just sat across from the church and watched them leave the church on their honeymoon. I was too stunned to cry.

I tried to reason it out.  Surely Chip would explain it when he returned.  The next three weeks were torture waiting for his return.

After he was back I managed to get him on the phone and asked him how could he do this to me after all we had meant to each other. He said could we meet and he would explain.

We met at an old house in the woods where we used to meet and have sex. When he saw me he started in like he always did and I let him do what he wanted to. He explained the situation as we made love and said I was the only one he ever loved and as soon as he was fixed he would divorce Maribelle and marry me.

That satisfied me and I felt superior to Maribelle at that moment. She had his name but I had his heart. The next months we continued to meet but when I would see them together he seemed perfectly content to be with her. Gradually I realized he had no intention to divorce his wife for it would have meant he would lose his job.

After a year I moved away to a large city and got a good job and made friends.

I met a nice man named Ashton and we went out often. I didn’t have feelings for him but a date with him meant a free lunch and he didn’t try to make a move on me like all the other men I dated did.

A year passed and he took me out to a romantic restaurant and during dinner he asked me to marry him. I was surprised, so much so I told him I would have to think about it, he said okay he wasn’t going anywhere. After a week of thinking and discussing it with my girlfriends they convinced me I wasn’t going to do any better so I said yes.

We were married in a simple ceremony and he was only the second man I ever had.  The times of intimacy weren’t exciting like with Chip but I pretended it was great. Actually as I thought about it wasn’t that exciting with Chip a lot of the time.

The days, weeks, months, and years came and went. And after twelve years we had two children.  My life was dull and my girlfriend’s lives were boring also.

I had been in touch with Bonnie one of my friends in the home town and she said Chip had been asking about me. He kept after me until I gave him your Email address so watch out for a note from him. Your husband might not understand or maybe he would.

My first Email from him said simply; Are you happy? Those were magic words but made me want to scream “Hell no, I’m not happy” so I answered and said; it is good to hear from you.

The next Email from him said I have missed you and would like to see you. It didn’t take long to get down to the stuff he really wanted to talk about and we arranged to meet in his hotel’s restaurant. He said I have a room if you would like to come up and visit for a while.

The next three hours brought back old memories and the excitement returned as we pleasured each other. He told me that he and Maribelle were divorced and her father fired him when he found out he had been playing around.

He was in town with the promise of a job. It wasn’t as good as the former one but it would pay the bills. He said he wanted me and he wanted to fulfill the promise he made to marry me years ago. I was taken captive by the smooth talk he laid on me.

Two timing but too blind to see!

I divorced my husband and Chip and I lived together until the divorce was final. Then I found out he was cheating on me. He moved out and moved in with the young thing he was cheating with.

I just go to work and come home now. About once a month I go over and see the kids for a few minutes. A few minutes is all I can stand with them for the memory of what I gave up is too painful.

My oldest asked if I would like to meet their new mom. I was shocked for I didn’t know he had remarried. My child went and got my ex's new wife and I almost passed out.  It was my friend from home Bonnie.

So many questions were going through my mind. My Ex, Ashton appeared and said perhaps a word of explanation is in order. All of our married life I knew you were not fully committed to me.

After twelve years I decided to find out why. I went to your folks place and they introduced me to Bonnie. She told me the whole story about you and Chip.

I decided to either put an end to your fantasies about this phony you’re so mad about or end our marriage. I tried to win you over but sad to say I failed.  When he got caught with several other women he lied to Maribelle but her father wasn’t taken in by his smooth talk and he fired him plus he ran him out of the business he was in and no one would hire him.

I had Bonnie give him your Email address and you know the rest. She and I fell in love while this was going on and just got married. The kids love her and she loves them.

As I turned to leave Bonnie said, "I want to thank you for giving me the finest husband a gal could ever want.  It is too bad you didn’t know what you had."

So there you have it. My boo-hoo story. I hope my experiences have hardened me enough to live out the rest of my life without the pain of deception.

Yes I know, I fell for it more than once and will probably allow deception back in again. If he came back I would pout a little and then with open arms welcome him back because I can’t tell the difference between what’s real and just the image of reality.

I had true love once but threw it away for the shadow of unreality. Now you my listener, are you waiting with desire for those magic words, “ARE you happy?”

SECTION 10 RANCH

She inherited the ranch and some live stock. Along with that a lot of debt due to some bad investments her dad made before he died.

She had a full section with good grass and at this time about sixty head of saleable beef and lot of cows with calves that needed branding.  She could only brand a half dozen a day if she was lucky.

If she could get enough of the steers to market she could survive another year but this was unlikely the way things were going.

Here she was single and with no prospects for marriage. She wasn’t old, only twenty one but the people in the area believed she should become an old maid school teacher and sell her ranch.

Word was she ain’t ever gonna get a man cause if she ever loses her ranch no one would have her.

When her pa was still alive he wouldn’t let anyone near her and none of the young men ever got to see her beyond the bonnet that all but covered her face.

The people who held the note on her place were ready to pounce on it as soon as the note was due.  Each day things were looking darker.

She tried to borrow some more so she could hire at least one hand but the money people wanted her land and wasn’t going to help her keep it.

Then one day she saw a stranger looking over her herd and it looked like he was counting them. She went to the corral and threw a hackamore on one of the horses and headed for the stranger at a gallop. He saw her coming so he rode toward her and removed his hat as she approached.

As he said, “Howdy ma’am,” she lit into him demanding to know what he was doing on her land looking at her cattle.

He quietly replied, “Ma’am I was just admiring the condition of your cattle. I’m from the Pecos country and down there the cows are gaunt compared to these.”

“Why were you counting my herd?”

“Well ma’am I was just trying to tell how many calves still needed to be branded and as near as I can figure there is about ninety without brands.”

She still angry said, “What’s that to you mister?”

“Nothing I guess but I was just wondering if you needed some help catching up?”

She said, “No I don’t need the likes of you.”

He went on saying, “I reckon I can understand you being upset at seeing me a doing what I was doing but I meant no harm.  I thought I might be of some help to you being as I’m a top hand.”

As she was settling down he went on and said, “I don’t mean to say something out of place but you are way behind in branding and cutting the steers out for shipping. If you are going to get them to market you better get moving.”

“It’s none of your business but what you say is true.  The thing is I don’t have the money for wages and I can’t do it all by myself.”

He said, “Suppose I helped you; would you feed me and have a bunk for me?”

She said, “I don’t know you or if it’s safe to have you around.”

He replied, “Well I’m just what you see and I’m harmless.”

She answered, “I see you don’t carry a side arm.”

“No not usually, I have one but what little shooting I do I use my rifle. He continued, “We have about three hours daylight left suppose we use that hot branding iron and brand a few calves before dark. Get your iron ready and I’ll be right back with a calf.”

A couple minutes later he had a calf tied and ready for the iron.

As darkness approach he said, “I figure we got half of them done and tomorrow we can finish the rest if you are a mind to.”

She just stared at him and said, “See the bunk house over there?”

He said, “Yes I see it.”

She said, “Go over to it and light a lantern and then you’ll find some blankets for a bunk then come to the house and I’ll heat up some beans and bacon for our supper.”

When he lit the lantern he could see the place was dusty and needed a good cleaning.  He fixed his bunk and at least it was comfortable. After washing up he went into the kitchen and she served him some food which filled an empty place for he hadn’t eaten all day.

She said, “I need to talk to you and explain some things.”

He said, “Why don’t we wait till tomorrow after we finish the branding because we will be done early, and right now I could use some sleep and I suspect you could also.”

He said goodnight and was out the door before she could answer but she thought “He’s right I need some rest.”

The next morning while she was cooking a big breakfast she thought I wonder what his name is.

He had fed the horses and saddled them. She called him and they began eating their breakfast.

While they were eating she asked him, “Do you have a name cowboy?”

He said, “Most just call me Hack and I always answer to that.”

She said, “Well I answer to Ellen or El and you can call me that.”

They walked their horses to the corral and he said get two irons ready for I will bring them in the corral two at the time. She was amazed at how fast he was at throwing and tying a calf. He would tie one and then the other while she branded the first.

He changed horses ever so often so as to keep them fresh especially after the herd began to scatter. They finished the branding in record time and he fed the horses and put them in the corral.

She fixed their food and as they ate she explained that she was broke and wouldn’t be able to pay him until she got her check from the slaughter house which was usually three weeks after the sale.

He said, “That would be alright if he could stay there and fix up the place until he was paid.”

She agreed to that but added “You know your place?”

He answered, “Yes ma’am I know and will keep my place.”

She said, “Just so you understand how things stand.”

He said, “I understand but it wasn’t necessary to tell me that.”

She said, “Good!”

The next day they cut out half of the steers and pushed them down to a lower pasture where the others would be joining them tomorrow. She told him he would have to work alone while she went to the railhead and to tell them she was bringing her herd in tomorrow so they could be ready.

She returned in the late afternoon and Hack was finished with the cutting and had begun to move the herd toward the railway.

She brought him some biscuits and fat back fried up crisp for he hadn’t eaten since breakfast.

He said, “If we are going to make to the rail head in time to load we need to push the herd on until it is dark and rise up early tomorrow.”

She said, “One of us should ride herd tonight.”

Hack said, “I have someone who will do it for we need to be fresh for tomorrow’s push.”

She wanted to know who was going to watch over the herd tonight and Hack said. “I’ll tell you later for it is a long story.”

She started to object but she was too tired, anyhow Hack would be sleeping on the ground near the herd and would wake if there was a problem.

By the time she caught up with the herd the next morning he had pushed the cattle several miles toward the rail head.

She said, “At this rate we’ll be there before twelve and by four we will be loaded and sold if the buyer offers a decent price.”

Things went just as she said except for two things.  First off somewhere along the trail an Indian woman had joined them and Ellen never knew when it was.

She rode up to Hack and asked, “Who is she if you know and what is she doing here?”

Hack said, “She has been with us right after I arrived. Thing is if she doesn’t want to be seen you won’t see her.  She just now decided to join up with us.”

“Is she the one who rode night herd all night?”

“Yep she’s the one and she has been helping me move them along this morning.”

“How did you hook up with her?”

He said, “On the way to Chicago I’ll explain everything meanwhile the cattle are lagging on your side so punch em’ up.”

They got the cattle in the loading pens and a buyer was there making a count. He was talking to Ellen and offered her a low ball price which upset her very much. She came over to Hack and told him what the buyer had said.

Hack said, ‘The cattle are almost loaded. You have just enough time to go to the hotel and get a bath and I will have you some new clothes for you by the time you are through.”

Hack looked at the buyer’s count and his offer and said, “Your count is short and the price is too low. These aren’t West Texas scrub cattle; these are prime beef so we won’t be dealing with you.”

The man said, “Wait a minute I was dealing with the lady and it’s time for you to ride on out of here.”

As he said that he motioned for two tough looking men with guns to side him.

All a sudden a shot rang out and the Indian girl shot a bird on the wing out of the air and it landed between the men.  She then stood with her two six guns drawn and was aimed at the two toughs.  Seeing her shoot the bird while flying over them with a six gun took all of the meanness out of the three of them.

Hack said, “Now I think it is time for the three of you the mount up and ride out of here for I have no control over her and if she is of a mind to she will cut loose with both guns.”

The yard master saw what happened and nervously told Hack they would pull out in thirty minutes and if he was going with them he better get ready.

Hack quickly told the Indian girl Rose after they had left to take his and Ellen’s horses back to the ranch and to watch the place till they returned.

She nodded yes and took off at gallop with the horses Ellen and Hack were riding.

As she rode off he thought to himself, “There will be three men who are going to make the mistake of their lives if they try to do harm to Rose for she is unforgiving.”

Hack went to the toggery shop and bought Ellen a new outfit, inside out.  She quickly got dressed at Hack’s urging and they headed for the train.

She said, “Thanks for the clothes and you know a bath wouldn’t have hurt you.”

He said I’m going to be riding with those cattle a good deal of the time so it wouldn’t have lasted.

After they were on their way for a while Hack left the cattle car and joined Ellen for dinner in the dining car.

During dinner he said, “You wanted to know about Rose and how we hooked up.  I found her in some rocks along a trail with buzzards flying over. I took her and nursed her back to health and she has been with me ever since.”

“Are you using her for pleasure?”

“No I never touched her that way. She doesn’t want to be messed with and this was the reason she was in the condition she was when I found her.  Some men gave her some Brandy and got her high and then tried to have their way with her and she resisted them. They got her knife and finally overpowered her and beat her badly and left her to die.

When she was back on her feet the first thing she wanted to do was to find the men and even the score. I was pretty mad about the way they treated her so I agreed to help her. We found two of them by themselves and she made short work of them.

Later we found the other two men half drunk and asleep. I stayed back a bit while she went to work on the two of them. As I thought back I feel I should have done the men a favor by putting a bullet through their head but it wasn’t my game and I didn’t have a hand in it.

Another thing was I didn’t know if I could have done anything about it anyhow. She had anger unlike any I had ever seen; it was a cold anger that was expressionist.

I could tell that she was remembering the whole episode detail by detail as she dealt with each man; them giving her a drink with some substance that rendered her helpless. The beating that followed and each of them raping her while being held down by the others.  Then being dumped to die.

Once she was satisfied that justice had been served, she seemed to be return back to her normal self which is gentle and kind.

Ellen said, “From what I heard she was riled up at the rail head.”

Hack said, “Well yes, there is that side of her.”

She dropped the subject and asked, “Since this is your idea to take my cattle to Chicago where will we find a buyer that won’t cheat me?”

Hack said, “Don’t worry I have wired ahead and a buyer will meet us as soon as the cattle are in a pen and the count is done.”

She looked at him and said, “If this works out you will be a handy man to have around but I’m afraid I couldn’t afford you.”

Hack smiled and said, “Well so far it has only cost you a little food and I think you can handle that.”

She looked at him quizzically and said, “That’s true but I’m waiting for the big surprise.”

They finished their meal and after he paid the waiter he said I better get back to the cattle for they have to be missing me by now.

The trip only took a day and a half with no unexpected problems and they were quickly unloaded into the pens designated for them. The buyer was there on time and greeted Hack as if he knew him.

Ellen thought, “I hope they aren’t too friendly for I may be going to be taken in.”

Hack said, “Ellen this is Lowell the buyer for the best restaurants and I might say the most expensive in Chicago and New York.”

Ellen said, “Hello, nice to meet you,” and wondered what was going on.

Hack was talking to Lowell in subdued tones she couldn’t understand until Lowell said, “I don’t know what your pa is going to say.”

Hack came over and said, “Let’s go and get your check.”

She said, “Wait a minute you didn’t haggle with him, didn’t he try to get our price down whatever it was?”

“There was no need I told him what he had to pay and that was it.  Now, let’s go and get your check then and go out on the town.”

They went into a fine hotel and the concierge held his nose as Hack talked to him and then said, “Yes; I understand.”

Hack came back and said, “Go with the bell boy to your room and I will meet you shortly.”

Ellen had never been in such a room before and was enjoying the view when a knock at the door brought her back to earth. When she opened the door a couple of women came in and started measuring her. She was too shocked to object and a few moments later they disappeared.

Ellen said, “Wow.  What was that all about?”

A half hour the women returned with their arms full of clothes and one of them started stripping her clothes off while the other started drawing a bath for her. She needed “Freshening up” after her ride on the train.

They dried her off and started to dress her with things she had never seen before. There was a knock on the door and one of the women answered and said she will meet you in the lobby shortly.

Her hair was the last thing they did. They swept it up on top of her head after trimming off the broken ends. Then they stepped back and said, “You’re so beautiful Mademoiselle.”

Ellen looked in the full length morrow and couldn’t believe she was looking at herself. The maids rushed her out and said, “Your handsome man is waiting for you so go, go.”

She felt a little foolish in these glad rags but tried to walk like the women were walking in the hotel.  It wasn’t easy after riding a horse most of her life.

When she got to the hotel lobby Hack was waiting for her and he said, “How do you feel Miss Ellen?”

She said, “I don’t know; pretty good I guess.”

He said, “We’re going to see some of the in places in Chicago and enjoy some good food.”

The next morning she told Hack she had to get back to the ranch for she was worried about it.  He said, “Rose would take care of everything so just relax. He said let’s do a little more shopping and we will head out of here.”

On the ride home she first became aware that Hack was a handsome man. She had been so caught up with the ranch problems she had never looked at him close like.

As for Hack he had seen prettier women but Ellen was a very comely lady when fixed up and was desirable to look at something a man would like to get his hands on.

When they arrived to the rail head there was a man waiting for some equipment. Hack helped him load it on his wagon and he offered Ellen and Hack a ride out to her place since he was going near there.  They were riding on the back of the wagon and the driver couldn’t hear what they were saying due to the noise the wagon made.

She asked for more information about Rose.  He said, “There are several things you need to know about her. Her mother was French catholic. She was captured in a raid across the border into Canada. The chief decided she should marry his son. Shortly she had a girl child and because she loved roses she named her Rose.

She died when Rose was sixteen about six months before I met Rose. I went to that village and chatted with the chief and met the mother briefly. She was ashamed of her plight and hid Rose away though I had a glimpse of her.  Rose saw me and remembered me from the camp when she got well.

Her mother taught her the ways of a Catholic but her father insisted she know the way of the Indian. So when she was assaulted the way of the catholic was offended and the way of the Indian demanded vengeance.

For these last three years she has been with me and is most protective of me.

Ellen said, “Did you ever see her naked?”

Hack had to swallow before answering that one. He said, “Many times.”

“Has she seen you with no clothes?”

Hack hesitated and then said… “Many times. When we come to a stream and are hot and dirty we just go in and wash up and cool off.”

“Would you strip off and go swimming before me?”

Hack said, “No I wouldn’t.”

“Why not?” She asked?

“Well it’s a cultural thing; the white man’s culture is different and would provoke different thinking.”

“You mean you didn’t have some feeling when she is without her clothes?”

“Yes I do, I admire her lean firm, well-muscled body and think she is lovely. I also have a strong feeling for her like a brother would.  But it stops there.  She and I are very close and I respect her hybrid catholic upbringing and don’t cross the line.”

You mean, “She isn’t desirable?”

“She is one of the most desirable women I have known but we have bonded on another level and unless that changes we will remain as we are.”

Ellen didn’t speak the rest of the way home but her thoughts were highly active.

When the neared the ranch house Hack yelled for Rose to come out from where she was hiding and suddenly she was on the wagon.

Ellen thanked her neighbor for the ride as Hack hugged Rose who pretended that she didn’t like it like a child but it was obvious she loved every minute of it.

In good English Rose said, “Good evening Miss Ellen.”

It was the first time she had spoken except in Cree or broken English.  Ellen was surprised at that for it took her from being a savage to an educated woman.

Ellen said, “Where is she going to sleep?”

Hack said, “In the bunk house with me.”

“Do you think that is proper?” Ellen asked?

Hack replied, “We have slept under the stars and in barns and in rooms together for three years and I never question whether it was proper or not.”

Ellen said, “I get your point but I just can’t believe you haven’t been intimate with her. It’s like you said she is… well, desirable. Could it be that it’s something to do with you?”

Hack said, “I think this conversation has gone far enough. I have been perfectly honest with you at every turn and your mind set won’t let you see the truth. It will be best if we all get some rest and be rested for tomorrow.”

The next day Ellen rode over to a neighbor woman’s house and asked her what she thought about a white man living with an Indian woman for three years who claimed to never have touched her.

The woman said, “I would say he is the biggest liar of all time. Those Indian women can drive a man crazy with lust and they are all over a man.  No man could resist one of them Indian women if they really came after them… not even my Samuel.”

The conversation went on like that until it was time to go home.

When Ellen arrived home she said, “I want Rose to sleep in the barn and not in the bunk house for I don’t want to make things easier for you.”

Hack said, “You are in good shape now financially, your ranch is safe, and you can hire a hand to help you.  This is what I set out to do and now my job is finished. Tomorrow we will be gone and you can have our horses and gear. Just pick them up at the rail head.
As for Rose she sleeps with me here in the bunk house tonight and in a week she will be in a Catholic Convent to finish up her education.

I should thank your neighbor for her input into the situation for she helped you get your feelings out in the open. She was wrong though in her analyses for things were and are just as I told you.  I would appreciate it if you would leave and let us get some rest before we leave tomorrow.”

Ellen turned on her heel and left. She spent a restless night thinking over what Hack had done for her and that he had been a gentleman all the way.
He probably had told the truth about his relationship with Rose and though he hadn’t said it seemed he had some feelings for her.

She decided to straighten things out in the morning. Her neighbor was an old fool and didn’t know what she was talking about.
Because she had been restless and didn’t go to sleep till late in the morning she slept late. He was gone and his gear was on the bunk he slept in. she saddled her horse and made tracks for the rail head but when she got there the train was gone.

He left a note for her and it said; the horses are in the corral and are yours. Also the wages you paid me are in the saddle bags so be well and have a good life.

P.S. As it turns out you were partly right about my relationship with Rose. Last night she confessed she had a man/woman love for me and I had to admit this past couple of days have cleared my thinking concerning her. I find that which I have been avoiding has surfaced and I am madly in love with her. As soon as she is finished with her one year at school we will be married.

The images of her slim firm body keep coming up in my mind and I fear this is going to be the longest year of my life.

Rose is coming out from being Indian and her Catholic side is ruling her now. She has put her two six guns away and now only has her knife she carries.

Perhaps by the time she finishes her year at school she will put it away but I wouldn’t count on it.

One other thing you should know is the hotel, restaurants, and all the places we went to are part of my inheritance. I had to get to get the wander lust out of my system before I settled in and began to take over and run the family business. You didn’t meet the main man; my father for you weren’t ready for that.”

As she led the two horses back to the ranch she wistfully kept thinking of what might have been if she hadn’t been such a fool.

She smiled and said out loud; “Maybe another tall, sunburned stranger will come riding by and want to be of help to me.  Especially since the word is out the ranch has been paid off.”

MOUNTAIN MUSIC

The Wind Sang a Song and it Was Like Music

The whole thing started before I was born and I have to depend on those who were alive at the time for the details.

My father (Larson) made his first exploration into the mountains laden down with things he needed to survive and thirty five beaver traps. He soon learned if he was going to trap any beaver he was going to have to go deeper in the mountains for too many trappers had already caught the beaver in the nearby streams.

He traveled inland and found the spot where he was to settle. The reason he settled there in part was because of the sound of the wind blowing through the trees and he called it Mountain Music.

He had much more gear than he could carry so he hid part of it in a small cave that a bear had been hibernating in for the winter. He hoped the bear would not return and destroy his goods. He needed to make two more trips before he had all of his survival equipment on site where he was going to live.

His plans had been well thought out and he had brought some seeds for a garden and planted them right away. Next he built his cabin which was just a one room with a rock fire place and chimney for cooking and heat.

The cabin backed up to a hill he had dug out which made it easier to heat in the winter. An outside fire pit was used for most of his cooking during the warmer months.

As much of his garden harvest he could dry was put away for winter and some deer meat as well. Then came the winter and trapping season.

He was lucky the winter wasn’t as severe as some seeing as this was his first experience in the wilds. As winter wore on he became more adept at trapping beaver but the loneliness almost drove him mad. In the spring he made his way down to the fur trading company and sold his furs, bought new supplies and convinced a widow to join him in the wilds.

The woman had lost her husband and was having a difficult time getting by. When Larson proposed to her she jumped at the chance to be married again. As soon as they were married they left for the long trek up river.

He couldn’t wait till they reached the cabin to start having relations so each night was spent in getting intimately acquainted.

As it turned out she was as eager for the evening sessions as he was. The result of these evenings was a child was conceived and eventually born. That just happens to be me.

Outside of having to carry me to term the warm months weren’t too bad but the winter was confining. After I was born they kept the cabin warm because I would kick off my covers and they were afraid I would catch a cold. The routine went on year after year with my father having to go farther and farther away from the cabin to find the beaver.

My mother became more and more depressed due to the loneliness, because of my father being gone several days at a time.  For my schooling they sent me away to the Indian camp a few miles away and she became depressed.

My father had made friends with the tribe near us and the chief liked me very much. A few years ago he had put his old wife in a tent away from his and taken a young squaw with whom he had a boy now my age. He had lost his older sons in a skirmish with another tribe and now his old wife couldn’t have any more children so he took this young squaw for his wife.

From being with his son I learned much about how to hunt and trap game for food. I also learned to speak his language. I was ten and with my father running our traps when a bear that should have been in hibernation came from the woods and attacked my father. He shouted for me to run and run I did.  Later I went back and buried him.

The bear acted like a mad dog and I suspect she had been infected by a wolf bite or something. I had to run the traps that winter and come spring when we made the trip to the fur buyers my mother met a river rat who hauled goods up and down the river. He wanted her and she had been without a man for several months so she agreed to be with him.

He told her he couldn’t feed the both of us and it came down to either the river rat or me. She took half of our money and bought some new clothes leaving me with hardly enough to get by come the winter.

As they headed down the river she never looked back and that was the last I ever saw of her. I gathered up my goods and headed back to what was my home.

I had to put in my garden and do all of the necessary things at this time of year. After cutting my wood supply for winter and stacking it away I then went to visit my friend and the chief. I told the chief about what happened and he said he understood why she had done what she did.

I thought I wish I did for this man-woman stuff was something I couldn’t fathom.

That summer I spent a lot of time with the Indians and began to observe some things I never paid any attention to before. They let me and my friend sleep in the tent with them and after the summer I understood how men and women connect up. I still wasn’t sure why they did but that understanding came by the next year.

I began to experience some longings I didn’t fully understand at first but soon it became clear. Another two years passed and my friend who was fifteen years old took a young squaw to wife and after that we didn’t do much together.

Looking back to when I was eight years old my dad, mother and I went to Jamboree where all the mountain men met for a few days. There was a lot of drinking, some fighting and one thing which I hadn’t seen before was buying and selling Indian squaws. I didn’t know you could sell people even if they were Indians. No one seemed to object, not even the squaws.’

At night the dancing was the high point and it went into the next morning. I saw so much I had never seen before like knife and axe throwing contests. It was a great time and I always wanted to go back but for one reason or the other I didn’t up till now.

This year I had saved up a lot of trade goods and decided to go to jamboree. The chief let me have one of the old horses. And I loaded him up with my goods.

When I got to jamboree people were still arriving and immediately something caught my eye. There was a trader who had a repeating rifle. I had only seen one but from that time on I wanted to get me one of my own.

Only the army was supposed to have them at this time but there it was and was for sale or trade. The man let me look it over and as far as I could tell it was almost new and I had to have it. We dickered back and forth and he wanted everything I had. I said I want it but I have to look around and see if there is anything I want more than this gun. There was as usual a lot of whiskey and quite a few Indians wanting to get a jug.

As I rambled around I saw a man who had some Indian girls for sale. There were several mountain men looking them over but most of them walked away saying if I wanted one I would catch me one. The man tried to garner more interest by having each one of the remove the garment they were wearing and making up a past history for each of them. There were several more lookers when they took their clothes off.
The man said; now take this one she has only been with a few men and is good as new. He said about the same thing about each until he came to the last one and he said she is guaranteed to never have been taken.
She is what you call a virgin and her price is double what the others are. After all the jabbering there were some guys who were more drunk than the others who came up and bought each of them except for the one on the end.

The price is too high they shouted, and after one night she will be just like the rest, make her take her clothes off. She refused to remove her buckskin dress and the man started to beat her for not obeying him.
Indian Maiden
I didn’t want to see her hurt so I told him to let her be. No need to mar her and bring down her value let them imagine what’s under her dress and if they want to see it make them buy her.

He just turned and said to the crowd it’ll cost you to see her naked so get out your cash. I hated to see her go with these rough men but it would take a large portion of my money to buy her and I wanted that gun more than her. Besides I had seen a lot of Indian girls without their clothes in the water taking a bath; very young girls to the old ones so that wasn’t of much interest for me.

I left and went and bought the rifle with a lot of shells and a reloading machine. I already had a fair amount of lead and powder so I could reload my shells if necessary. The next morning I headed home with my rifle all loaded and ready to fire.

The girl scarcely crossed my mind all the way to my place. I kept telling myself I wasn’t interested in her and by the time I reached home I just about believed it.

That evening there was a knock at my door and when I opened it there stood the young woman. The man who bought her had gotten drunk so she slipped away and she tracked me to my home.

I knew he was a determined kind of person who wouldn’t give up until he found her.  It was ten days later when he showed up at my house and I had spotted him trying to sneak up on us.

I told the Indian girl to hide in the cabin and I would take care of the man. She was nervous but did as I said. When he came up I was loading my new rifle and I said howdy. He said he was looking for an Indian girl that belong to him and wanted to know if I had seen her. I lied and no I haven’t seen anyone except you since the jamboree.

He said he wanted to look in the cabin to make sure. I said, “Go ahead but there was a wolverine that sneaked in there and I was wondering how I was going to get him out. I said go ahead and get him out for me.”

The man turned white and said, “I ain’t messing with no wolverine you get him out yourself.”  With that he turned and left.

After he was gone I told the girl she could stay until she decided what she wanted to do. The winter came on and she still stayed on. We had a good garden and I had killed some meat for us and it didn’t seem long till it was spring.

During the winter I had a spell come on me and I became a bit unsettled. The Indian girl who I named Martha seemed to understand what my trouble was and took care of it. Before winter was over I began to understand my mother left and why she did what she did.

One day we were out and about and went in the creek and took a bath together. It just struck me that I had a wife. I was married for all practical purposes. After three years and one half breed later the beaver ran out and I heard there was a gold strike over the mountains to the west.

We packed up and headed to the west and manage to hit on a claim that was a good producer. After ten years the easy gold played out and I sold my claim to an outfit that had the equipment to rip the earth apart.

We walked away with a lot of money and settled on a ranch in the Oregon territory.

We finally found a preacher and had him say words over us. We were legally married after she had given me six kids. The kids took after me and were almost white and the girls were so pretty men couldn’t resist them.

They each had several proposals and all married well. With a good education all my kids fit right in the area we lived in and were well respected. Martha has been able to understand all my moods and keep me on an even keel and my feelings for her are; she is one smart Indian girl who was willing to take a beating rather than to expose herself before a bunch of drunken rowdies.

I think it was that which made me fall for her even though I bought the rifle instead of her.

UNCLE JOE

Uncle Joe

A few deserving words about Uncle Joe (Actually my great uncle.)

There was now and then and it’s now in Uncle Joe’s life. I reckon it is only fair for me to include a little of both in this tale (Actually a true account) about a man some only judged by the mood he gets in his later life.

Now everyone gets moody once in a while only Uncle Joe’s was more pronounced. Some describe it as a spell where he is in what they call another dimension.

I am his favorite grand-nephew I guess because he will on occasion talk to me a little before he gets in his mood again.

He doesn’t talk to other people at all excepting Aunt Gwendolyn, that’s his only daughter who visits from town once in a while. If I have a question about Uncle Joe I just ask my Aunt and she will answer me if she is a-mind to.

Over time I have pieced together stories about Uncle Joe and I still don’t have the full picture but some of it has come into focus.  He was born into a family of six boys and a few girls (I don’t rightly know how many for girls weren’t that important in those days except for marrying) and they weren’t rich or poor, just the kinda like the get-along best they can class of today.

Uncle Joe’s family owned a smallish farm with a barn, house, well and of course the outhouse. With each new child the line to the outhouse got longer so they built another one out by the barn (with two holes.)  They were one of the few around who had two privies. Today we don’t think anything about having two inside (bathrooms) but then it were special.

Uncle Joe (My great uncle) was raised like any other child on the farm meaning he did chores like milking gathering eggs, and slopping the hogs and such. He was about a medium size build meaning he wasn’t real big or very small. He took his studies seriously and graduated the eighth grade with honors (Meaning he finished the eighth) where most boys didn’t and hardly any of the girls.

Perhaps I should explain about the girls; before they got in the grades above the sixth they were either married or pregnant or both.  In those days the shot gun caused many a boy to propose to the gal they had been diddling with.

Uncle Joe escaped that man- trap by sticking strictly to the good book and not messing around. When he was about twenty he decided to take a wife so he wedded a young woman who lived down the road and since there wasn’t room to move her into the home place he moved into her folks’ place.

He stayed with her for about six months and then returned home for he didn’t like it over there; but he was there long enough to sire the child Aunt Gwen.

One of his complaints was he didn’t like the way they cooked the fat back. They lived just down the road from Joe’s folks place and it was said he would visit his wife every once in a while.  (When her folks’ passed on she lived by herself for a while till later when she moved in with Uncle Joe.)

At this point of Joe’s life (After he moved back home) he began preaching and tried to build up a flock and work at the same time. He would preach it right out of the book but people just ignored him.

One of his favorite sayings was; “You might not be interested in where you came from but you better give attention as to where you are going.”

After a few years he just quit for only a small handful would come to hear him preach and some of them only come to make fun.  Joe decided that the devil and moonshine were just too much to overcome.

Joe lived a righteous life but as he said; if people want to ridicule you they will come up with something and many found comfort in the fact he left his wife pregnant and moved back home. They would say he wasn’t much-a-man to do that although most of them had done worse.

There were a few happenings that got people’s attention and that was when Uncle Joe took his bull-whip to several different men over time that tried to seduce his wife.
Joe could handle a bull-whip better than a mule skinner and he could cut the flesh with every lash.
As with all things over time the memory of the beating the most recent brave soul got would fade and someone else would make the mistake of trying it.

One occasion that was talked about a lot was when four men tried to set a trap for Joe.

One was going to make a move on Joe’s wife and when Joe came down with his whip all four were going to beat him almost to death. Joe figured something was up and he took his bear dogs with him. When the four came at Joe it was sic-um time and… well let me just say some plans go awry and that was one of them.

When Joe started using his whip and said sic-um to those bear dogs it was a short but violent time. Sic-um to those dogs was a license to kill.
Those men were from down river and they never got over what was meant for a bear or a boar along with the gnashing with that special whip Joe had brought with the little pieces of metal in it…crippled as they were and angry as they were they never dared to make a mistake like that again and stayed down river the rest of their crippled lives.

Joe never mention it till this day and I don’t expect he will again, but they were several who went down to see Joe get his Comeuppance (for a number of them had tasted his whip) and they told the story of what they saw over and over again.

From that time on no one ever tried to mess with Joe’s wife again unless they were an unaware door to door salesman who made a similar mistake and later they all said that were the biggest mistake they ever had made in their life.

Somehow Joe always knew when someone of that nature were in town and sought them out afore they satisfied their wants. He gave them what they didn’t want and… let’s just say what the town folks said; “They never saw hide or hair of them again.”

As Joe’s siblings married most went to town and got day jobs in the city but Joe stayed on the farm and raised his animals and farmed. The old folks passed away and the farm passed down to him.  His wife and Gwen moved in with him but he wouldn’t let them cook, only clean and wash clothes and on occasion gather eggs and some fruit for canning.

After his wife passed away my folks moved in on him. My mother was his niece and he allowed it would be alright if she and her kin moved in for daughter Gwen had married and moved to town.

My dad took over the work Joe couldn’t do anymore and Joe liked my ma’s cooking. By this time Joe would get up, eat and go out on the front porch and sit there most of the day. He would mumble all day long about the past and what he should have done.

He was hard to understand except when for a moment he would talk straight and I could get it. He talked about he should have kept preaching whether people listened or not and he wished he had baptized a few more.

He wished his wife had been able to cook to suit him for then he would have lived with her even though she couldn’t have any more kids after Gwendolyn.

He told about things nobody knew about and one thing was where he hid his money. I didn’t dare look until he passed on and sure enough it was where he said. Joe was strange to some but years later I realized all he was about was living righteously and most people can’t cope with a righteous man for their ways have an admixture of unrighteousness.

He was a good man but didn’t tolerate foolishness or people blatantly sinning against God or him.

Being around him his last years made me realize that if I chose to live a Christian life there will be bumps in the road but if I pass on by and stay true to the course it will be worth it all.
